Hi

Im wondering if anyone has any advice.

Just over 8 weeks ago DH's friend split up with his wife, we offered him our spare room, as he thought his parents house was too close to his wife. The day he came to stay his car broke down outside our house so we pushed it onto the drive and he had full intentions of getting it fixed, the following week he attampted to fix it, but didnt and due to being messed about with his wages, packed his job in, so no wages, no money to fix the car. The following week he went to his mum and dads and didnt come back untill the weekend, to get all his clothes.

Its been 6 weeks today since he left, his car is still on our drive, a non starter and uninsured, ive been asking him every week when he is going to get it moved and every week its one lie after the other, "my dads coming for it at the weekend", "my dads coming this week", "my brothers mates buying it", "im putting it on gumtree". Every other day its a new one, I just want it gone, we cant park on our drive as there isnt enough room for our car too, he has the keys and the handbrake is on so we cant move it onto the road, we are also sorting our garden out but its in the way, so we are stuck at the moment.

We are council tenants, so ive been in touch with the council about it and they say they have no authority to do anything about it and to contact the police.

Does anyone have any other suggestions, from what ive been told, the police wont do anything about it as it is on private property.

  • If you really want it out quickly, either bouce it out or borrow a couple of trolley jacks, leave it out on the street then call the friend!

There is one way to move it, get a trolley jack, jack up the back end (in the middle) which lifts the wheels locked by the hand brake off the drive and them wheel it out onto the road. Leave it there, phone him and advise him its parked on the road uninsured.

LMAO @ woody good idea, all good ideas so far.
I would still be polite to him and just say enough is enough you've got 3 days to move the car off the drive or we'll move it for you. You have been patient enough and now you want the drive back as you can't get access to the garage/rear garden/whatever. If he doesn't move it then jack the rear up and pull it out to the main road.

When i was at school, a group of lads physically lifted a car and moved it to another part of the car park - it was a very small car, but if you had enough people, maybe it could be done....?

I'd pull it out into the road and leave it after one more weekend if I were you, phone him up and ask him to move it by sunday night, otherwise if its still there on monday you'll deal with it your way.
When he doesn't move it either bounce it out or jimmy the lock ( if you can ) and wheel it out to the road, the police and council will remove it for him and let him explain it to them why he isn't paying the fine.
All you'll have to do then is say " I kept asking him but he was ignoring me" or better yet " What are you talking about officer and who is this person?".

There is also a way of 'popping' the handbrake from underneath the car, I have seen council tow trucks do this abroad. Mate of mine did it years ago to one car that always blocked the entrance to the pub on delivery day, so they pop the brake and rolled it backwards which meant it was at 90 degrees to the kerb blocking the road. It was soon towed away and he never parked there again.
