Thanks to the OP and to this thread I have also converted to washables. I did not realise until seeing the above links that such things were commercially available. I got most of mine from ellas house and they are great. I'm also awaiting some night time ones from cumfybumfy. I may have to still use disposables occasionally, but we shall see.
I don't know about removing the wings though, zippy, I would imagine they might move around a bit too much without being fastened?Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0 -
Ailuro, Why not have a bash with a Mooncup? They're really not my cup of tea (I prefer towels) but I know a lot of people around have had really good experiences with it? I think there's a thread around on here, I'll go look....

Hopefully that will help :-)
I'll try the nighttime towels, but as I said I'm climbing into machinery,i.e. small spaces in awkward positions, or am bent over into the machine, and I just wouldn't feel secure with anything other than a tampon, the effects of it failing would embarass me out beyond words:eek:Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I have found some un-winged pads for sale on American ebay, they have fleece backs so will stay put a bit better. Just means i have to fork out all the duty tax but still cant be as bad as forking out for disposables every month.
There is also a Canadian website that looks good, https://www.newmoonpads.com am considering buying from this site in particular.
Just wish there was a way to avoid paying the customs and duty, etc.0 -
Thanks to this thread and all the positive posts I have just ordered my first washable sanipro from weenotions. I may have a try at making my own in future but nice to try a proven product first.
I have a problem with chemical allergies; I hate spending vast amounts of money on disposable sanitary towels (tempted to estimate how much I've paid over the years but too scared!); I am appalled at the estimated number of sanitary towels going to landfill, or worse still turning up on the beach or even (as I saw myself some years ago!) in sewage manure spread on fields.
Washable sanipro is so logical! Thanks everyone for the information and the links. :j... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I've recently converted to a mooncup and today I received my set of 6 "fairy hammocks" from weenotions. So thanks to everyone who recommended them. I did have the idea that I might make some myself but, who am I kidding, I'm never going to have the time and the ones from weenotions are so beautifully made that I wouldn't be able to make them anywhere near as nice for £3.50 each (or £2.91 if you order 6!).
Just to echo what a lot of women who've tried them and liked them have said, I wish I'd known about them years ago. I shudder to think about the amount of towels and tampons I've used and chucked over the years.I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!0 -
i've just read the whole thread because i did not know such things existed. Washables are definitely not for me i must have been effected by the commercials - but I really feel crappy enough when i have my period without having the extra bother of washing my sanitary products.
Also can I ask what you do on a day or night out? where do you put the one you change? surely you dont carry it round in your bag? do you?
And also as a newly pregnant woman I have looked into the option of reusable nappies - mainly for environmental purposes, but the research ovrwhelmingly suggests that the environmental effects of resuable nappies is equal to disposeable nappies, simply becuase of the amount of washing and products they require to wash them. So surely this is something similar for sanitary products?
good on all you women who are doing your bit but its not for me.DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

Just a report back on the fairy hammocks I bought from weenotions. They are wonderful, cant believe how comfortable they are; first day I panicked as I thought I hadnt put one on - it was so comfortable I didnt know it was there!! Easy to wash and they dry really quickly too. No going back to disposables for me now.
I also bought some fleece and PUL and going to have a go at making my own, but the weenotions ones are soooo comfortable I think I will be buying more from them.
I didnt know such things existed until I read this thread so thanks to all of you for the info :T... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I got some panty liners from Weenotions and think they're great but I have just one small niggly problem with them, it's as though the wings are too big so they don't wrap round my knicker crotch properly. They tend to bunch up at the front and back and I get a wedgie
I've thought about maybe cutting a bit off the wings or maybe trying to make my own but don't know if I'm good enough at sewing. Has anyone else had a problem with them bunching up and not lying flat?

Well, if they aren't for you, they just aren't and you're best just moving swiftly on
However, to answer your questions:
Personally, I don't go on 'nights out', - but if I did, I'd set off in a clean pad and change it when I got home.
At work, I have a waterproof make up bag dedicated for the purpose of transporting my clean pads and bringing used pads home. They fold up neatly into a small 'packet' shape, and fasten with the soiled side on the inside. They don't cause me any trouble. There have been no complaints from anyone I work with, so I gather no-one has noticed any problem odour (and believe me, they would say!)
Laundering is a simple affair and takes no extra cleaning products as they are washed in the normal laundry. The pads are rinsed in cold water as soon as practical after being used, then soaked in a bucket of cold water with salt until I put them, and the make up bag, in with the normal towel wash. I do this twice a week normally. No problem, no extra detergent required.
Really this is a decision only you can make, and if you don't fancy washables, then you just don't, and that's that.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0 -
i think you're right best to move swiftly on - i just never knew such things existed! and on a big night out i'd be out from like 6pm to 3 or 4am - that would be at least 3 changes! i couldn't wait until i got home!DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY
