Weekly shop done today. I am very pleased with myself as I haven't fallen into the top-up-shop trap! So lots has been run down and I have made myself a Great Recipe Hunt list. It is a list of all the things I have in the back of the fridge, cupboard and freezer that seemed like a good idea that flopped. So I have finished up the mincemeat and sundried tomatoes. Now I am looking for recipes that use wheatbran, semolina, ground rice..... Main criteria is that I don't have to buy lots of other ingredients to use up old stuff! I will be making almond slices first, any other ideas are very welcome!
    .

I must do this! I have almost all the random ingredients you mention in my cupboards too! And some pearl barley and broth mix packs. Why do I buy these things? I had to extend my food storage places into other rooms with all the bulk buying and random ingredients!

Chloris. I use semolina with my roast potatoes, parboil them drain and shake in enough semolina to coat the potatoes, it makes them lovely and crispy, also works with chips cooked in the oven.

Mothership. I have spent the evening reading your mails re 2nd and 3rd purses. Not spent any of Junes budget yet so I am putting it into action from now. I have always bought things when they are on offer and then shopped from home when things have got a bit tight, but never paid myself. Will keep you informed of progress.

    Hi everyone,

All I can say about my month so far is ... oh dear. I have spent over half my months budget and am only 33% of the way through my month! On the plus side, I have been stocking up on toilet roll, washing powder, fabric softner, dishwasher tabs, tuna and baking ingredients. Most of these things should last well in to next month so hopefully I can still stick to budget. In the spirit of meal planning I have made a list of meals which we can make out of what we have got in and I was suprised to find I have got all the ingredients to make 13 meals so I am gonna try and just make these meals before doing another big shop.

    Hope everyone is doing ok

Duuh. Menu plan for this week included chicken breast stuffed with mozzarella and wrapped in parma ham (all in the freezer I thought). Appears the chicken was chicken qtrs. Will it still work or do I need to rethink the menu? Not sure where to put the mozarella:rotfl::rotfl:

I thought it was just me that did things like that :o
Not sure about wrapping - but I'd go for parma & mozz topped chicken instead! Before I started paying attention to prices I used to buy something similar from MrT - it was a metal tray with 2 (small!) chicken breasts, topped with a few small pieces of ham and mushrooms, with cheese over the top. I've done it myself a few times since - yum yum. Used to think getting 2 of the trays for £5 was good value

Otherwise I believe if you have a sharp knife you can still cut a slit in the quarters and stuff the yummy bits in there.
  • Given up on May as I spent a bit more than signature says but as I used a dtd voucher up I think that is nearing to the real mark. Been busy on flylady thread again this month so now house is clean I am concentrating on grocery challenge this month - need to get my spends down although I now have a job want to save that money rather than supplement the food bill!!!

Put me down for £350 for june 5 week month again

I am determined to keep and register all receipts on my spreadsheet. So I will have accurate running total - well thats the theroy anyway.:D

I am buying more and more at aldis and since you can't use credit cards there I am noticing the reduced number of clubcard points:mad: I am getting from it. Still I am saving as it is cheaper than tesco, I rang tesco yesterday as i thought I had more vouchers than the website said I had seems it only lists last 2 years worth so I was delighted when they said I had £18 more than I thought. Now got £206 worth saved towards merlin passes only need £44 more to get 5 free passes and a year of fun.:T

Right off to sort food cupboard out to try and meal plan what needs using up.
Thanks to MSE savings we got to go to Disneyworld Florida.

Thank you for the idea. I am a lazy cook when it comes to parboiling. So could I cut my potatoes up for chips/wedges, coat with semolina when cook in the oven?
