I have found myself in the mobile phone minefield too as I want to buy a first smartphone for my wife and we are both on old payg Orange phones.

It sounds like the best plan is for the Orange San Francisco on giffgaff which is the reason for me piggybacking this thread.

I can use a phone fund to help buy the San Francisco at the Orange shop and I have signed up for a couple of giffgaff sims. Is there a recommended place to get this phone unlocked? A quick search led me to a Russian site which the anti-virus sw looked alarmed at. I've spent ages looking over the last few days and a quick push in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Still £79.99 but you also have to buy it with a £20.00 top-up so effective price is £99.99

Don't know about shops or phone, but online it's 99.99+20.

It was a shop-only deal. And it's great if you know anyone who works for NHS/council/school/uni.
