Were the credit cards legally allowed to give her thsi amount of credit without checking her employent or income ?
Yes. Perfectly legal. Commercially unwise perhaps, but it doesn't absolve the borrower of personal responsibility.

Not uncommon for a housewife to be offered a credit card.

Out of interest, how come you never noticed her excessive spending?

You wouldn't need to 'agree to guaruntee payment's and such like.

Did she not tell you about any of this?Do you think she may have a bit of a shopping addiction or similar?

If the question asked was about household income, the OP's wife has done nothing wrong in obtaining the card.

The subsequent spending is what has created the problem.

Some companies definitely ignore household income. My OH can't get any more than 10% of her income as a credit limit with egg, even though I am well into higher rate tax territory and we share all finances.

Oh but you did, or don't you remember your wedding vows?!

Why is it people seem to think that they can get married but still live like single people? Perhaps if the OP had been more generous with his income and shared it with his wife unconditionally, she would not have resorted to taking out credit cards behind his back and he would have been aware of her overspending a long time before it became a problem...

Thats a bit over assumptive isnt it? How do you know OP wasnt be generous enough? Wife could just have spending problem, especially as she kept it a secret until OP lost his job!!
