in Credit cards
Whilst my wife was unemployed bringing up our children she was offered and took out credits card whcih gave her over £20k worth of credit.
I only found out when I lost my job last year.
The most she earns now on a part time basis is £7k
cards now frozen but debt will take nearly over 20 years to pay off
Were the credit cards legally allowed to give her thsi amount of credit without checking her employent or income ?

What information did your wife give to the card companies when she applied? In need of a new signature! :rotfl:0

Why did she apply for credit if she knew she could not afford it?
Was she declaring that she had no income, or was she entering the household income?Gone ... or have I?0 -
Have you ever been in debt DMG? I wonder why you are on a debt forum, when you are so quick to flame anyone who has got into problems with debt. You could ask why are any of us in debt, we must have spent beyond our means at one time or another - that is why we are on here

I have ... and it was all my fault. I have not flamed the OP, I have asked questions that would be pertinent to any complaint.
You seem a little oversensitive - do you have a problem with taking responsibility for your own actions?

She likes to flame everyone for everything
Don't let it worry you

tenmah - dmg24 isn't 'flaming' the OP, he's/she's asking questions that the OP really should be asking his wife.
There's no point asking such questions, here, on this forum, of a bunch of strangers.
The OP is clearly dealing with the debt, but some hard questions still need answering in that household.............. Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0 -
The OP definately needs to ask those questions.
It could turn out that the OP wife as been entering false information of the application forms, which could lead to trouble.
But I guess we also need to ask, just how much do companies check up on information entered on application forms. Do they simply rely on there internal score system and what is on the applicants credit record.0 -
In order to answer the question in the title the questions DMG24 asked need answering
Unless it isn't a question but a rant that doesn't really want an answer
The answer to the second question is yes it was legal regardless of other answers0 -

No one has been flamed.
This is not a debt forum. It is a forum for discussion of the practicalities of using/maintaining credit card accounts.
dmg24 asked a straightforward question. What information did the OPs wife give on the original application form?0 -
I thought all credit card applications were credit checked. Perhaps the way round it was to get one from the bank that your wages were paid into....? Or did she get them in your name?
But 20k of debt is a lot of money as most of us know. While I think it is a bit remiss to offer/tempt us with high amounts of 'credit'; ultimately we are all responsible for what we spend. It cannot be the credit card companies responsibility for your wife spending the money and/or not telling you.Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0
