I said "usually" I know there are some that do it but lets be honest, they are still flouting the law so the moral high ground is some distance away...

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

.... and it's them who'll get done for it, not me, so I'm happy.

Beats paying £30 at the local factors or £30 each at Halfords :D

The concerning thing which seems to have dropped off the radar is the service history. Does the V5 say who owned it before? Might be worth checking out as that sounds well dodgy and could be a combo of fraud/over paying for a car with history it doesn't have.

Well, eventually got hold of the "garage" that supplied the service history stamp.

Superb! Mind, if it is a fairly new car and only one stamp, worth getting an oil and filter swap done for peace of mind i'd say.

Check the dipstick for the oil colour and see how dirty the airfilter is.

TBH if it has a dubious history I'd give it a full service - oil, all filters, plugs, etc and get someone to check it all over well.

Not quite right. Usually these 'show plates' will be lacking the BSU number and the postcode of the place that put them together so technically not legal. Would be hard pressed to get done for it but I have known cars fail an MOT for it as it means the sale of some more plates.

Demon Plates (for example) make "show" plates that have (in very small letters) the correct BASU markings / postcode etc.

Very hard to spot from afar, but if you zoom in enough...

it is an offence to sell number plates without proof that the person ordering them is the owner of the car
this is why they are called show plates
they should be made illegal unless you produce your v5 and the utility bills
think of it this way show plates might at this minute be on the same make of car as yours because someones cloned them via the internet
    dont think it happens?
    happened to me
    not nice

I don't think they should be sold either (without the V5), however at the same time I wouldn't of had to resort to the internet if I could of found someone locally who'd make me some plates that are legal (i.e. have the postcode on) without having some stupid branding on them (i.e. "HALFORDS").

Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it stops.

In late jan 2011 I bought a car from a small second hand sales place. Engine management light been on twice since, repaired once under warranty and once I've had to pay. Most recent repair, last Friday, dealership ( different place from where I bought car), noticed a letter on reg was different to tax disc.

Why did you have to pay?
