Help! Car sold with wrong reg plates!

In late jan 2011 I bought a car from a small second hand sales place. Engine management light been on twice since, repaired once under warranty and once I've had to pay. Most recent repair, last Friday, dealership ( different place from where I bought car), noticed a letter on reg was different to tax disc.
Phoned car sales place and told them, and they said they'd send plates out straight away. Still not received them. I spoke to them Monday and said they'd post them first class Tuesday.
Can they legally make my plates without a V5?( I would've driven straight over, but not used car since, as advised, insurance invalid! And they are about 40 miles away)
Also, since this problem, I've noticed the service book is merely stamped, no mileage recorded, no signature or job numbers. (sold with full service history)
I've tried to call the company that stamped the book, no one answers. And on google maps it is a residential property 2 minutes from the car sales.
I don't want to speak to the car sales as they are so arrogant and make me feel like a pathetic woman with a silly complaint!
I've spoken to dvla, useless.. Consumer direct tell me to claim for damages, what damages?
Ideally I'd like to give the car back, and go elsewhere, but have no idea what to do or how to go about it.
I'm sorry it's such a long tale, but I hope someone out there has got some good advice. Thankyou in advance.

The car was a few pounds under 7k, so not a small purchase and paid by debit card.

So its just the numbers on the plates that have been switched when the dozy apprentice was putting them through the wringer? HPI the car if your worried, but I think it is just a mistake from a low-level dealer.

Does the VIN number on the car match the one on the V5?

It does. I checked and was a bit disappointed to be honest!

So if you fit the correct plates, will that satisfy you? Beginning to think you may be having 2nd thoughts.

Just the plates would be nice, but it's been almost a week, and I've been without a car! I'm just pee'd off with their attitude towards me. Last time I phoned to ask if they had posted the plates out, they told me no one was going by the Post Office, that day, so it'd be Tuesday before they were sent.
I've given them no reason to be so hostile towards me. I've always been polite.
I feel I'm being fobbed off, and after care is obviously not one of their features.

How far is this second hand car place from you? Can't you use public transport or get a lift to their premises and pick up the plates in person??

Happened to me once. Different plate on the front and the back. All the paperwork was for the correct rear plate... except the MoT which had the reg from the front on it.

The dealer just sent me a new MoT certificate and a new front plate.
