You might be best using a different internet browser on your computer. Try google chrome or mozilla firefox.

There are two kinds of 3G if you like. 'Normal' 3G and HSDPA which some carriers describe as 3G+

If you are getting a 3G logo appear on your phone then you are receiving a normal 3G signal. If you see 3G+, HSDPA or just 'H' then you are getting high speed 3g.

    Which network are you on?

    i'm on 3 mate.
my phone shows H but when i connect via my lappy, it states it's at 115.xxkbps which i know is 3G (HSPDA is 7.2mb if i remember rightly)

i'll try FF but it doesn't work so well with the mmo i play (astro empires). it's only a txt based game so doesn't require my D/L speeds to be anything spectacular. sometimes, i can play it fine for a bit but then it'll start doing what i described earlier!! maybe after as much as an hour, other times after 5 minutes. slow to access pages, 'page cannot be displayed' etc. i end up having to close IE, disconnect my phone, turn off 3g and then turn it all back on again and even then, it sometimes still the same.

i know it's not my lappy as it works fine when i connect to a w/less router at friends/relatives.

i've used various phones to access the .net over the years. in fact, i've just borrowed an F390 (one of 3's own brand phones) and am on the .net with that now and i'm not having any problems!!!

I've only ever used three in the past for a mobile dongle (which I later cancelled over a billing dispute)

I don't know what three's terms of use are of if there is a fair usage policy but it could be that they have flagged you as a user that frequently tethers and they may be throttling back your speeds.

Best to take a look through your contract and see if tethering is permitted. If it isn't then don't mention that you are doing this but ask them why your phone is indicating an HSDPA signal yet you are getting standard 3G speeds.

Let me know if you get any more info so that I can best help others in the future. :)

my tariff includes 1GB/m data and it was 3 themselves that suggested i have it added instead of getting a seperate PAYG dongle from them.

i phoned 3 tech *ahem* 'support' *ahem* and tried to get help from them to no avail. i have to wait for senior tech support to contact me apparently.

i just seems strange that my latest and greasest technological asses is out-performed by ancient artefacts!!! one of my previous phones was launched at a wall and 'still' managed to hook up to the net with more reliability that what i have now!!! :?

i'll pass on any info i get from them 'if' they get in touch.

thanks for your help and advice, i appreciate it :-)

Ok so you are on an android operating system.

If you go to your phone's homepage and tap and hold a blank bit of screen (you will need an entire horizontal clear space on the screen)

A menu will appear 'Add to Home Screen' tap on 'Widgets' and then scroll down and select something called 'Power Control'. The name is misleading as this does lots more things. Make sure you have the data icon added and add this to your homepage and it should look something like this...

From left to right (wifi, bluetooth, GPS, Data, Sync, Brightness)

These now act as ON/OFF switches. If you tap the Data icon so that it goes dark like above then no 3g/2g/GPRS data can be sent by your phone. The wifi function is entirely separate to this.

    hi t_t
this is exactly what i want to do to my optimus p500 , but when i go into power control there is no data symbol , just the wifi, bluetooth, gps, sync, brightness . so ..... how do i get the data symbol to come up ?
    Thanks in advance

Buying a new smartphone without a data allowance strikes me as being like buying a new car but refusing to fill it with petrol!

Pay the £5 extra and use the phone how it was designed!

But... when you long-press the screen and select "power control" there should pop up a configuration screen, where you can add "data" to the list.

    Failing this (and it really does depend what ROM/version of android you're using);

Press "Menu" button (or go into app list)

    Select "Settings"

    Select "Wireless and network settings"

Select "Mobile network settings" (at the bottom)

    Uncheck "Data enabled"

The power widget just prevents you needing to go through that process!
