I'm on the much loved (and talked about on MSE) ZTE Blade or Orange San Francisco. It comes with a naff 2.1 android system but there is a large community of developers who design ROMs.

My phone is rooted and I have installed the 2.3 CM7 ROM so it works brilliantly.

I don't know with regards to the optimus but on mine there is a little light to tell me when I have a new message. There might be an app that will continue to make the noise every few mins.

Unfortunately the LG Optimus One doesn't support flash at present and most likely never will. This is because it has a 600MHz ARMv6 (11) processor.

The problem isn't actually with the processor but rather it is with Adobe. Adobe chose not to support ARMv6 with their flash player releases. If they decide to support it in future versions of flash then it would work but that is unlikely.

Naturally BBC Iplayer uses the flash framework so that won't function.

    :(

this is confusing me. i stream from a couple of sites that embed youtube playlists. i can't watch them from the site on my p500 but if i search for it on youtube, they play ok yet they are both flash!!! (youtube app is on phone already).

i'd rather watch from my preferred site as most of it is multi-part documentaries but finding them all on youtube itself and making your own playlist is the most annoying thing since the beginning of humanity!!!!!!!!

Halfway through last year Youtube switched from Adobe Flash to HTML5 on videos via their mobile site. This is how you are able to watch youtubes via your phone despite not being able to watch flash videos.

    thanks for the info
    proper bummer though :-(

another thing i'm having problems with is when i use the phone as a modem on the 3g connection. the net runs so slow!! i'm finding myself having to restart IE quite a bit as well.

my previous phone was an old samsung slide (L700 i think) and i never had any problems with it.

even though 3g runs at 115kbps, it's more than adequate for basic browsing.

You might be best using a different internet browser on your computer. Try google chrome or mozilla firefox.

There are two kinds of 3G if you like. 'Normal' 3G and HSDPA which some carriers describe as 3G+

If you are getting a 3G logo appear on your phone then you are receiving a normal 3G signal. If you see 3G+, HSDPA or just 'H' then you are getting high speed 3g.

    Which network are you on?
