hi there
i do not have an internet allowance on my sim contract , plus the signal is only 2g in my area , is there a way on this phone to turn off gprs, so it does not connect to the net in this way and cost me money?
also will WiFi still work ok with gprs off ? ,
hope i have made the right choice in handset what are other peoples views on this
, many thanks

Ok so you are on an android operating system.
If you go to your phone's homepage and tap and hold a blank bit of screen (you will need an entire horizontal clear space on the screen)
A menu will appear 'Add to Home Screen' tap on 'Widgets' and then scroll down and select something called 'Power Control'. The name is misleading as this does lots more things. Make sure you have the data icon added and add this to your homepage and it should look something like this...
From left to right (wifi, bluetooth, GPS, Data, Sync, Brightness)
These now act as ON/OFF switches. If you tap the Data icon so that it goes dark like above then no 3g/2g/GPRS data can be sent by your phone. The wifi function is entirely separate to this.0 -

Well you have made an excellent choice in choosing an android phone, I can say for certain that you will enjoy your phone.
As for wifi vs. 2g/3g they are in essence identical in what they will allow your phone to do, they just provide a different means for data to get to your phone. The main benefit of wifi is that you will get speeds that are much faster than your phones 2g/3g signal.
So you will be able to check you emails in seconds, browse the net as quickly as your home computer, access android market, facebook, twitter etc. So using wifi will in no way limit what you can do with your phone.
As for your phone's satnav/GPS capabilities. I believe your phone is running android 2.2 (good news as it is infinitely better than 2.1 and will perform better and make your battery last longer) GPS on most phones works in two ways, it listens to satellites via the onboard GPS unit (like a tomtom) but it can also operate in 'Assisted-GPS' mode. This means that it uses the satellites and it also communicates to google via the internet to fine tune your location and give you more accurate directions from A to B.
If you are out and about and have 2g/3g disabled then you won't be able to use assisted GPS and as such some functionality of your satnav apps will be reduced.0 -
with the gprs turned off i assume i will be able to make calls and send text?, will that go over 2g? , many thank0

With the data icon turned to the off position you can still make and receive calls and send and receive texts without a problem.0

i assume with the date icon turned off , i won't be able to receive mms messages? , many thanks0

In most cases an MMS message is simply a normal SMS message with an instruction to download data (picture/video file) so you would still receive the message but when you tried to view it you would get a notification saying 'Unable to connect...blah blah'0 -
lg have told me to use an app from the market place called APNdroid, i assume that does the same as the above way
? , many thanks
on the mms message when you get unable to connect if i then connect through wi-fi would it download them?0 -
APNdroid (and other APN apps) add a little more functionality that you wouldn't get with the onboard 'power control' widget. Nevertheless I'm not convinced they add that much value to the casual user but in your case you might find it suits you better. It is a free app so you can always give it a spin.0
