Is wish people would stop calling those who are trying to support breastfeeding mums the Breastfeeding Nazi's or Breastapo etc. It is highly offensive!

People complain if the support isn't there, they complain if it is. Healthcare professionals and volunteers cannot win!

It depends what form that "support" takes though, if it is support and encouragement for those who want to breastfeed, that is as it should be.

If however, it is coercion and/or bullying, those who have chosen not to breastfeed for whatever reason, then that is where the terms you so dislike are appropriate.

Just thought it was worth mentioning that breastfeeding is definitely money saving.

My sister breast fed for 4 months, then switched to bottle as baby was always hungry. Lo and behold the baby is now much less cranky.
It might just be the polycarbonate plastics leaching from baby's bottle into the milk and causing sedation.

the whole bottle feed vs breast feeding debate is something that people will never aggree on. Those that took to it like a duck to water are lucky. If it's a choice of having a baby go hungry and going along with the who guidelines give me formula any day. I remember the panic I felt when my baby was sicking up blood. Turned out it was mine not hers. Yet still the midwives kept pushing for me to continue trying to breastfeed even though she was not getting enough
Being a parent is endless decisions and guilt trips. How you choose to get a milk to your baby in those first few months is no one elses business than your own.

I have read this thread with interest.

I would like to thank everyone for their views and experiences on bf.

I am in the same position as the op,as in my daughter has just had her first baby and my first grandaughter eleven days ago, she has been in tears with the mw saying more or less what the op said,my daughter thinks she is an unfit mother as she had had difficulty with bf initially, luckily for her she has mastered it and is now feeling better about it.

I dont know where the mw gets off worrying my "baby" with rot,she even said that formula fed babies are more likely to be a cot death!! if ever i see her she will get a piece of my mind, and i wont mince my words.

I did not breast feed through choice, more power to those who do, because at the end of the day the choice should be down to you, but to use scare tactics, it beggars belief.
Thank you all so much for this thread x.

Breast milk might well be preferable but I don't think it should give rise to such polarised views. Just because breast milk = good doesn't mean formula = bad. Why can't it mean formula (in most situations) = the next best thing? After all, it's perfectly all right for women with, say, HIV who shouldn't breastfeed, or people on certain medicines. Are they subjected to the same over-zealous behaviour from people exhorting them to breastfeed? Of course not. By all means, encourage breast feeding - it's the ideal solution after all. It's just not the only solution.

This type of pressure is so counter-productive one has to wonder why so many MW have not realised this.

Information and sympathetic support would be far better, as being able to relax whilst BF is vital.

Several small points overlooked in selling BF is the help it gives in returning your womb to normal, weight loss, reduces the risk of Osteoporosis and reduces the chance of falling pregnant. None of these benefits are available with formula.

Very true, but not to be relied upon as a contraceptive!
