Ihave had this problem in the past with Asda as well - normally it's not a problem, but whe it comes to the end of month it can be a pain.

If you 100% sure that the cost of the shop has been paid out of your account you can call your bank and ask them to release the money that Asda has 'reserved'. I bank with the Coop and have no problem doing this.

It's a shame that Asda can't get their act together over this - as I don't have this problem with the other supermarkets I choose to do my end of the month shop with Sainsburys, even though I prefer Asda.
Don't judge people on they way they look, the way they speak or what they're called because they can't help that.

Only judge people on what they say and what they do.

Blissfulbabe - as in my first post, I used to be able to do it but today I was told by the Co-Op that they can not longer release the money with/from Asda.

Can I just check something, because I seem to have taken this a different way from many other posters.

Are you saying that, on the day you do your online shopping it for example comes to £25 and that amount is 'pending' on your bank account.

Then the day the shopping arrives, the actual amount is £26.50 because of weights etc so ASDA debit your account for £26.50 however the £25 remains on hold until your bank either crosses it off for you or it drops off the system by itself?

So in effect you need to have double the amount required for your shopping?

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

It does seem unusual.Keeping extra into cover it is all fine and well if you have the extra in the 1st place but not everyone does.Besides which, its your money and they're stopping you spending it.
Keep posting on this page and eventually someoen from Asda will see it as a lot of the big companies monitor sites like this.

    Something like that....but not exactly.

You need to have only what the cost of shopping is (as per original order plus possibly a bit to cover extra weight of some items atc) but whatever that amount is, if it is different to actual cost of shopping at delivery date - Asda takes from your account the amount as at delivery but still keeps the other amount (as per order) as pending so you are unable to take money from your account, equivalent to the original order cost.

Yes, exactly that - and it does not matter if the amount on delivery date is higher or lower than the amount on the order date.

They still keep the order amount as "pending" on yoru account and it can take up to 10 days to drop back.

I think that people do not even notice this if they have a lot of money on their accounts, this crazy Asda's practise may go unnoticed.

My account right now says £25.43CR but I am unable to pay for anything online or take the cash out.

You only notice that procedure if you do not have much money on your account and try to take some out...

Say you have 200 on your account, you order from Asda for £110, when delivered it is £105, you see on your online banking that Asda has taken the £105 so you think you still have £95 on your account as it shows £95CR. You go to another shop, put things in your troley and at the till your card is refused - because Asda has put the £110 on hold and still has it on hold despite you having paid the £105. You end up lookig silly at the checkout as you say you have money but your card keeps on getting declined... Fantastic situation to be in...NOT

If you have a lot, the 5-10 days "to clear" goes unnoticed...

A great deal of negativity here for what seems like a legitimate issue.

I am lucky that for a £25 shop i could probably cover the temporary shortfall of money, but sometimes our shop can come to £100. I certainly wouldnt have that available to cover.

OP - you said that tesco does not accept your card.....which seems strange. What card is it and could it be that the issue only affects that type of card?

It is Co Op visa that does seem to be Electron for some reason.

Lots of people have problems with this particular card at Tesco online, no problem in the shop but impossible to order online - it is the Co Op cards that start with 4508.

I placed an order with tesco online, all went through and on the day of delivery got a phone call from them that they are unable to take the payment and I needed to go to shop to collect and pay at the till.

Later on found a lot of info on the net about this tesco/Coop/Electron issue.

With Asda I have ordered about £300 worth of stuff near to Christmas and they have blocked that amount till after New year - that happened before, that was first time I have noticed what is going on with their online shopping/payments.

But as I said before, I would call my bank and they would clear the "pending" amount seeing that the proper payment was already made - but today they have told me that they can not do it any more....

Just found this thread - very embarrasing for the OP there, Asda again...

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2775006

I have just been to the shops and had my current account card declined due to insufficient funds, even though I know I have £170 balance in that account.

I didn't have my phone with me, had no fuel in the vehicle and had to walk home for fear of running out (after the embarrassment of having to put everything back on the shelves!). I went home and called my bank (Coop). They told me that Asda were holding £161.06 for some home shopping was delivered and paid for on 30th September (and which came to £157.05 in total) even though the £157.05 has already been debited from my account.

After complaining to Asda and getting nowhere, I called my bank as Asda had told me the funds were being held by my them and should have been refunded. I called the Coop and was told that the funds had, in effect, been taken twice by Asda and that the money would clear on my account again in a few days. I was furious as I had already paid and this left me with no cash to withdraw. The Coop were very helpful and have now released the funds.

What a con. The Coop have advised me that they have written to Asda on a number of occasions and asked them to stop this practice, but that they continue to ignore the request. This is happening, apparently, to a number of people on a regular basis.

Apparently, this procedure is all mentioned in the terms and conditions of the website. I'm still to find them. Surely Asda should be made to make this much clearer to people? I was really embarrassed that this happened in a shop I go to all the time. I was at the front of a big queue and felt awful!
