Incidentally, if the online bill comes to £50 and there are no substitutes is that initial £50 just taken therefore the problem doesn't occur?

Yes, where there are no problems the payment part is straightforward. Asda usually take the payment on the day the shopping is delivered or the day after...in my experience anyway.

Yes, that does seem to be the case, if your order contains no substitutions and no weighed items that were estimated and the delivered order is the exact amount as the 'ringfenced' amount you're ok.

I stopped using Asda for this exact reason.

  • I have found in the past with Asda and Tesco that they both don't like my Co-op card (basic account) it used to be Electron and now says Visa Debit but it's still the same kind of account where there is no overdraft facility. Tesco refused it and Asda doubled up on the amount to take. I did an order this week from Asda on Monday,it came to £80.54 and it came off my account as exactly that same amount but when I tried to top up my gas meter card I couldn't because Asda was hanging on to the same amount in my bank leaving me nothing at all to spend. I rang the Co-op and they told me the amount Asda was claiming was £1 more than that and no they couldn't lift it now like they used to in case customers were trying it on as he put it and it was suspect to fraud!
I am an OAP and only have my state pension so I am stuck till either Asda let go of the money or my pension comes into the bank next week. The only way I have found to get round this problem in the past was to use a cash card like the Paypal Mastercard, where you put the money to pay for things.
Tesco will accept this card for groceries online also Asda,I have used it in the past with no problems. Silly me forgot to use it this week as I haven't had an online delivery for a while.
Something should be done about these people at Asda and Tesco, again,it's only poor people who suffer, just hope my gas doesn't run out, luckily I was able to use my Paypal card to top up a small amount but it may run out before I can do it again.

Has anyone actually asked Asda about this? Please dont respond with "yes, they are enot going to do anything about it" as that is garbage. Even Asda have some level of customer service!

I have had a nightmare trying to get to my money in the bank this week,My order was last Monday 11th July,£80.54,I was charged twice and my money was frozen all week till tonight. I rang the Bank (Co-op) on Wednesday about it,they said it was Asda's fault! I rang the bank again this morning, they told me to ring Asda as they couldn't do anything so I rang Asda and I was told by my bank to tell them to contact Streamline about it,they said they would ring me back and of course they didn't. I rang Asda again tonight and they said it wasn't their fault and I should contact the bank! I rang the bank yet again who said it wasn't them so now I was really losing my rag about it especially as he tried to tell me I owed the money to Asda! In the end they spoke to a manager who told the guy to release my account,he said apparently they can do this now where they couldn't do it before,so I said I was told at the beginning of the week that it was the other way round! Now they are saying yes they can release the block on it,I didn't quite believe him as I said I really needed the money for my gas meter and if I found I wasn't able to get it I would go ballistic! But it was OK. I will never use my bank card online for Asda again or Tesco if it comes to that,I plan to use a pre pay card! I feel absolutely worn out by it all, your better off going to get your own groceries from the shop!
