    I think we're talking at cross-purposes here.
I've got all my files from my XP machine and they are now sat quite happily on the Win7 machine.

On the Win7 machine, I'm going to partition the hard-drive into two to give me C: (for the OS and programs) and D: (for my documents).
Once I've done that and moved my documents over to D:, I want to hide C: so I can't put things on there by accident.
Having said that, I still want to be able to install software and Windows Updates onto it.

You're right, we're at cross purposes. The transfer method puts all the files and settings in the same place as they were on the old PC.
You can't hide the 'C' drive, it's the base operating disc for the PC and you need to install software on it and it is accessed by Windows.

I only want to hide it in Windows Explorer if that helps.

OK, thanks for that. Looks like that idea is out of the window (pardon the pun).

Create a restore point (or full image backup of drive C) and then feel free to try this:

If it works, you should still be able to access the drive without much difficulty.

A girl in the comments claims to have done this with Drive C - could just be joking.
  • You may find this article useful if you want to move your 'My Documents' folder to another location/partition.

I've done this and use Synchtoy to to Synch/Copy/Echo the files between a Win 7 machine and an XP laptop over a network with a few clicks. ( i.e. My Documents to My Documents)

You could schedule Synctoy to do it on the fly if needed.

RussJK - thanks, I'll take a look once I get home.

bubblesbonbon - I don't need to do this again, the XP machine is being wiped and donated to a family member as her machine is slowly dying. I'll only be transferring to the XP machine from another XP machine next time around so that should make life easier all round.

I think the HD is on the way out (it's making clicking noises) so she's having mine.
I'll be transferring all her stuff to my XP machine (I've already followed most of that thread on my machine) a.s.a.p.
