Hi all
I need to transfer lots of files (about 15GB worth) between two computers. One is running Windows XP Home and the other is Windows 7 Home.
As I see it I have two options:-
a crossover cable
a router
As far as I can see, I have file-sharing enabled on both machines but I'm getting nowhere.
How do I check that file-sharing is enabled properly on both machines? I've looked through the sticky and think I've followed everything but no joy.
Can I please have idiot-proof instructions for the best way to transfer the files as I'm struggling with both options?

Are you transferring from a single folder to another single folder?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I'm going to be transferring the entirety of "My Documents" on the XP machine to the Windows 7 equivalent.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Right click the folder and click on share button. Add the user to the file, (I believe you made a different user on other computer with password). Then siply copy the files0

I've tried that, but I'm not getting anywhere.
Does anyone have a "checklist" I can work through to get this sorted?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

It may be a question of privileges (ie the Win 7 My Documents is private and you don't have access to it from XP).
Can you see any folders belonging to the Win 7 machine from the XP one? There is usually a public folder created I think. If you can see one then copy to that from XP and move it where you want on Win 7 after it's copied.
If you don't see any shared folders at all then you haven't set sharing up correctly and it's back to the start. I don't think I can produce a more user friendly tutorial that the hundreds that are already out there on the web.0 -

I can't anything on either computer from the other one (if that makes any sense).
This is a first for me, so be gentle......:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Your first post was asking about cross over cables and routers - how did you get them networked? If you are only networking them to move these files then the post above gives the best options (usb disk, dvds, etc)0

The Windows Xp machine has IDE drives, the Windows 7 has SATA II.
I've only got a 2GB flash-drive so that could take a while and burning the DVDs could take hours.
I'd like to do it directly, if only for the experience (apologies if this makes life harder).:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
