we have 2 dogs samoyed and shiztzu the shiztzu started to bark at my neighbour through the fence ( she couldnt see them just hear them), a few weeks ago she had been bathed and groomed which takes hours and was in the garden, she started to bark next thing she came into the house looking very sorry for herself and drenched !!! our lovely neighbour had tipped a bucket of water over the fence at her!! she will not go near the fence now good or bad??? so she sits near the back door and barks at them!

Gemmalouanna - what did the council do, do you know? Not easy to stop a dog which barks every couple of seconds for extended periods of time to stop, especially in the middle of the night when the owner can't be bothered or does not hear, or else during the day when they are all out. This is not an every day occurrence, but we have had barking for a couple of hours once it starts, and have been woken in the night by the dog on several occasions. If it was just the dog seeing something and then settling back down again it would not be so bad, but that tends not to happen.

Blackpool council send a letter round straight away.
In the first house the lady next door (fine in every other way) worked odd shifts, the dogs had the run of the house when she was out and they would choose to sit in the bay window of bedroom barking constantly - the bedroom was attached to ours! We tried to approach her about it but didn't make much difference so contacted council (she also worked for them) couldn't have asked for better outcome - she moved a lodger in so someone was home more of the time and got the barking collars for when they were both out.
The second house about 4 houses on the street complained about the dog in garden - letter sent and they decided to give the dog to a home who would give it a better life.

Do you at least try and stop them? Just be thankful it was just water as I have heard people contemplate much worse where dog barking is concerned.

It really is one of the worst sounds to try and live with.

Cavework - I can well and truly sympathise with you and I know exactly what you're going through - its no consolation I know ...

I cannot believe people can be so inconsiderate as to allow it to happen!

I can't read al the anti posts so will just say this... dogs bark. Sad fact but they do. It is annoying but if you can ignore it till they settle usually about six weeks then thats great if you can't then earplug it. If you want to sleep with the window open expect noise... you'll be hard pushed to find silence anywhere.

We used to have a dog that barked and after lots of investigating and rigorous notes we realised that it was the complaining gentlemans Snoring that was setting our dog off at night... it was also keeping us up as we don't snore and the walls are thin... funny thing though people can complain about barking dogs but not snoring neighbours..... be tolerant a barking dog keeps away burglars!

A burglar deterrent dog only needs to bark at a burglar, not constantly!

You can complain about a neighbours snoring actually, if it's that bad that it keeps you awake, you can complain to authorities just like for any other noise. Chance are it will improve the neighbours health too, as snoring is not good for you, and is a symptom for many, some life threatening, illnesses (though not all snoring is of course).
Dogs do bark, but they should only do so when necessary. A good, conscientious owner will train a barking dog to stop. Dogs don't need to bark when someone comes to the door (a sign the dog thinks it's leader if the pack and is being defensive) doesn't need to bark or howl when alone (caused by separation anxiety, which is curable), nor does it need to bark at every cat or fox outside at night (caused by not training them to not act upon their prey drive). A dog that barks is usually stressed for one reason or another (barking in play is different), and what owner that loves his or her dog wants them to be stressed and unhappy?
Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!

i am now effected by barking dogs too. the dog looks like a staffy sort of dog and is left outside all day and night as far as i can tell. it is in a house 3 doors down from me.

yes dogs bark but they shouldnt bark and howl all bloomin night out in the garden!!

and i do not sleep with the window open and can hear them loud and clear

on a further note this dog is also allowed to roam (like a cat) out of its house and garden area.
i wont walk on that side of the road now cos i dont like a strange dog running at me. even though i know it is probably just being friendly
i saw it chasing a young woman with 2 petrified kids the other day and that is what has made me decide to complain (though the dog warden is on holiday at the moment!!)
