I had exactly the same problem, except it was 2 dogs that used to bark and howl all morning. I contacted the local council who came to listen for themselves and then they dealt with it. It's been a lot better since.

I had exactly the same problem with a neighbours dog barking contionously when left alone.
I contacted the council who did nothing, i then contacted the RSPCA (the dogs were left alone in a park home at 40+ degrees for hours as a time) again they did nothing!
Fortunatly the neighbours were moved due to health reasons (takan into social care) so then the problem was gone :-)

As far as I can tell the dog is not being mistreated in any way. Its just that when it starts barking it goes on forever!!! For it to bark for almost an hour in the middle of the night is just so frustrating when the householder does nothing.

Sometimes the barking commences when the householder leaves home and goes on for some time.
  • I have just moved my dogs from the conservatory for this very reason. My rottie (who has a REALLY loud bark) would start about 2.30 and take up to 20 mins to shut up!!! We are 2 floors up and could hear it so the neighbours must have. I moved him to my kitchen as i assumed he was barking at foxes. Then, last week, my staffy X started doing it as well so now they are both in the dining room with the curtains shut so they can't see anything and we haven't had any issues since.
I ADORE my dogs and i wanted to wring their necks so god knows how you would cope if it's not your dog! I think your neighbours have a disgusting attitude and i wouldn't hesitate in recording it then reporting them to the council.

That is one thing I have been doing for some considerable time - recording all events - so that if I need to contact the Council I have it all logged down.

However, I am trying to do something about it first, hence the original request.

I have tried thos eultrasonic thingys on my dog - 3 different ones, none of them worked.

There is no guarantee they will work on just any dog, mine was not bothered.

    Anyone got any ideas?
  • I know that our neighbour put in some high-pitched-type device to scare birds/insects/who knows what (!) away from his growing veg. He was very old, and no doubt couldn't hear it. His middle-aged son who lives with him is a bit weird, so I contacted environmental health, rather than speak to them directly. Environmental health came - older lady - and couldn't hear it, though it was distracting me so much I had to have headphones on inside the house. A friend who came over for dinner could also hear it, though my husband couldn't! Anyway, environmental health agreed to write a letter to them, advising them to turn the volume down, if they could. They did so - turned it off actually, and it's been back to quiet bliss ever since.

Whatever device you put in might actually wind the dog up more than if you did nothing. If it were me, I'd probably have a word with environmental health, and I have two dogs. I'm at home with them a lot of the time, and always worry about them barking and our weird neighbour doing something awful like putting poison over the fence - over-active imagination, I hope. Consequently, I'm paranoid if they bark, and have the front curtains drawn even when I'm home with them. Your problem is that your neighbours sound like they just don't care. I think environmental health is the only solution for that; I just hope your neighbours don't take it out on the dog :(

First thing - would it not get too hot for the dog in the conservatory ??? I only ever leave mine in there during winter when raining as she won't use her kennel - otherwise she is outside when we are out.

I would just phone the council - I have contacted them at 2 past addresses about barking dogs and found them to be excellent - problem sorted quickly and efficiently.

Gemmalouanna - what did the council do, do you know? Not easy to stop a dog which barks every couple of seconds for extended periods of time to stop, especially in the middle of the night when the owner can't be bothered or does not hear, or else during the day when they are all out. This is not an every day occurrence, but we have had barking for a couple of hours once it starts, and have been woken in the night by the dog on several occasions. If it was just the dog seeing something and then settling back down again it would not be so bad, but that tends not to happen.

Some time ago our neighbours told us that they could do nothing about the dog barking, even though we went round to complain very late in the evening about the amount of noise coming from their young child who should have been in bed but who was storming around the house - that was a very regular occurrence late into the evenings. So yes, we have complained to the Council previously.
