M y brother had a75 as a company car. It was a nice car, relaxed with classy older style and mechanically reliable.

I have had a couple of other Citroen models which weren't unreliable for the milage but had daft things go wrong with them. The 2.0HDI engine was a good unit but not as smooth.

  • out of the two i'd choose the 75/ZT.

some people mentioned a mondeo, and whilst i agree the unit under the hood may be bit better, its still a ford and comes with allot of cloth and plastic wich feels quite cheep.

the engineering on the 75 was good not much engine noise and road noise to be heared though the car did feel heavy and more felt in cournering.

the citreon, well, if you have a bottomless money pit to throw at it, i'd steer clear of anything french BUT THATS MY PERSONAL OPINION.

The op asked for opinions between the rover 75 & the Citroen C5 and between the two the 75 diesel is the better car and unless I'm mistaken no known DMF issues. Although I'm sure someone will quickly point out any errors I've made with that statement. lol. :)
The 75 has a DMF, and many garages like to charge an arm and a leg to replace it with the clutch - but it very *very* rarely goes compared to the Mondeo for example.

Definately the 75 imo - but then i'm biased, I own a ZT - but if it wasn't for the attitude shown in the thread, I'd never be able to afford one...

My Mondeo is an 04 plate on 150k still on the original DMF, I beleive later models (not sure which year) have a modified more reliable DMF.

I drove a C5 hire car last year, felt like a big, heavy, underpowered barge compared to the Mondeo. OK on motorways though once up to speed.

Never driven a 75, can't comment, but my grandfather has one and he likes it

    :)

I'm not a great fan of either car, but I'd imagine if anything the 75 would prove more reliable. The C5 still used Citroen's Hydro-Pneumatic suspention, which was great, but it was prone to malfunction, and had the opposite affect on ride and handling as it was supposed to have (working correctly, it was described as magic carpet ride quality...). Also, the same system is responsible for the PAS and braking system, therefore complete failure would be a nightmare! Also, unlike normal braking systems, whereby under failure of the brake servo you'd still have brakes (albeit not very good ones), with this system you'd have real issues stopping.

I assume, given that the hydraulics are the same as the Xantia/BX, so is the handbrake....Which is on the fron discs (therefore if you park at the top of a hill, be sure to leave the car in gear!).

Because they're cheap, and parts are and always will be readily available. You could say the same about a lot of cars that have been discontinued. The only downside with the Rover is that Rover itself isn't about anymore. For the price of a Rover, it doesn't matter that in 20-years time parts might be harder to come by, because chances are it'll be scrap metal by then!

An old C5 is obsolete aswell.

If you have never driven a Rover 75 diesel then you need to do so before you comment.

Without a doubt the best car ever to wear the Rover badge.

Had ride comfort considered better than the Merc S Class of the same time.

I had a mate, now a Black Cab driver, the was a fleet manager for a large courier/private hire firm, and he had loads of the Rover 75 in diesel, mostly auto aswell, they were reliable and very comfy, the only issue with them was that some other cars in the class had more rear leg room, this was sorted out with the introduction of a slightly longer version about 2 or 3 months before Rover went the way of the DoDo.

I will never forgive New Labour for letting Rover go to the wall, I feel the same about LDV.

The only people that say their products are rubbish are those that have never driven one, or at least not the late ones when most of the foibles were ironed out.

The only positive thing I have to say about the Zafiras at work are that they are apparently made in the UK.

I have driven LDV Convoys for years and they were a lot nicer to be in than say a Renault Master, they also had a better driving position than the Merc Sprinter, though the new one from 2008 onwards has a driving position almost identical to the one in the LDV, so the issue is resolved.

Getting back to the C5 or 75 debate, it has to be 75 all the way, ever had to fix the suspension on a C5 when it goes wrong?

Though to be honest the C5 is a decent enough car to own, with a nice ride, but in every way the 75 in diesel form is superior.

its not like the parts are like trying to find gold in a quartz mine, theyre there on the shelf ready just like the escort.
