You obviously haven't met the latest breed of middle lane moron - the total and utter nutter.

I'm driving along quite happily in lane 1, in no rush so doing a bit under 70, get nearer and nearer to some fool in lane 2 who's doing 60, don't want to undertake so drive along a 60 for a fair bit but decide I've had enough of that, so proceed to overtake, move into lane 2, check lane 3 and then move into lane 3, accerate heavily to overtake the car in lane 2 as quickly as possible.

What happens, once the middle lane moron notices I'm overtaking (I was alongside them) they floor it to stop me getting past, I notice that I'm already doing over 80mph. I only got past because middle lane moron has to slow down because they didn't notice the car in front of them. They then pull out into lane 3 and tailgate me. I slow down to the speed limit, I'm still easily overtaking middle lane morons in lane 2 and there's no room to safely move into lane 2 so I stay in lane 3. Original middle lane moron eventually gives up and then holds-up lane 3 by going at around 60mph (barely overtaking lane 2 traffic).

I have encountered that type, but I could count on the fingers of one hand how many of those I've seen. I see far more lane 3 tailgaters who are seemingly oblivious to the two second rule.

It seems most drivers don't see the dangers of following another vehicle closely at high speed, which is possibly why they feel middle lane hogs are the main concern.

Why do people rant about "middle lane hoggers" when they pose little safety risk in comparison to lane 3 tailgaters, idiots who join the motorway and think they have right of way off the slip road and of course the special breed of morons who beeline off the slip road, into lane 3 and sit there for the entirety of their journey. What about HGV drivers and the dangerous antics they get up to on the motorways?

A lot of the lane 3 issues would go away if the 60mph middle lane morons weren't forcing the people who drive at an indicated 70 into lane 3 where they conflict with the people who drive at a GPS 70 and the people who choose to exceed the speed limit.

And the only regular problem that HGV drivers cause is when they get into a game of "elephant racing" caused by their speed limiters, and there have been plenty of threads ranting about that on these forums.

60mph middle lane hogging is a lot less excusable than HGV elephant racing.

I don't think lane 3 tailgating can be blamed on any other issue. Drivers in lane 3 commit an offence of reckless driving (tailgating) through their own volition. There is no feasible reason that they can not allow a sufficient distance to the vehicle in front.

When I'm in lane 3 and dare to keep a two second distance from the vehicle in front, I am often (but not always) tailgated or worse. Yet I am keeping up with the flow of traffic.

Oh I'm not saying that the lane 3 tailgaters aren't to blame for their actions. But it would happen less often if lane 3 wasn't massively overloaded thanks to all the idiots unnecessarily hogging lane 2.

Those individuals out in lane 3 would still be terrible drivers, but they'd be causing fewer dangerous situations if lanes 1 and 2 were used more efficiently.

I hate to be sexist but following my recent personal survey on middle lane hoggers 90% are female.
    Easy solution really...

That does sound bizarre. I don't thing I've met one of those before. Any particular reason you stay in lane 1 matching their speed for a bit before moving out to lane 3 to pass? Perhaps that's antagonising them somehow.

In your situation, I tend to either move out into lane 3 early, or just pass in lane 1, ideally without changing speed either way, and I can't remember the last time I got a competitive or aggressive response (or much response at all to be honest).

If I wasn't in a no rush to get anywhere mood I'd probably have moved into lane 3 a lot earlier. At first 60 didn't bother me too much but after a while I found 60 just that bit too slow.

If I was in a bad mood I'd have just remained in lane 1 whilst passing slower moving traffic in lane 2 caused congested road conditions. :D

Perhaps they did feel I was antagonising them, I don't know the answer to that. But I bet they antagonised a quite a few more drivers who were stuck behind them doing 60 in lane 3.
