How many middle lane hoggers are doing it because.........

The gantry signs (on the M25/M1 anyway) don't give clear information - sometimes the next exit is indicated as being a filter for the entire inside lane (ie - the sign for that exit takes up 1/4 of the gantry, the remainder being for the M25/M1 or whatever road you are on) so the driver who is preparing ahead then moves out to the next lane so as not to be 'filtered' to somewhere he doesn't want to go, BUT the inside lane isn't filtered off, so he's left stranded on the 2nd lane - does he move back to the inside lane and risk being filtered again at the next exit, or stay where he is?....

Why do people rant about "middle lane hoggers" when they pose little safety risk in comparison to lane 3 tailgaters, idiots who join the motorway and think they have right of way off the slip road and of course the special breed of morons who beeline off the slip road, into lane 3 and sit there for the entirety of their journey. What about HGV drivers and the dangerous antics they get up to on the motorways?
I can't remember the last time I saw a middle lane hogger yet idiots still seem to rant on about them.0 -
But that's my argument - I am using the info on the gantrys to move out to the middle lane, but that information is wrong, I can't rely on it, but would it be more dangerous to stay on the 1st lane and then have to move to the 2nd lane at the last minute because I've just found that it IS a filter lane? If the gantrys gave the correct information, I could happily stay in the 1st lane.
If you opened your eyes, you'd see the sign for continuing was covering half of L1 as well as the other lane meaning that L1 continues. If the small sign for the exit covers the enter width of L1, that lane is an exit only, closes and ceases to exist.
It isn't rocket science.0 -

I don't Raksha will be bothered, his post was six months ago.;)The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
I normally travel between lane 1 & 2 or sometimes often between lanes 2 & 3 and can do so as it says on my driving licence near the bottom " tear along dotted line" hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Although he replied yesterday......
Moderators will deal if rules have been broken I am sure, so no ned for you to be so worried by mentioning it twice
I answer to Op question - no I don't think this is the reason for middle lane hoggers. I think the reason is lack of driver awareness of road rules and general selfishness. Can't say I find the motorway signs confusing at all0 -

You obviously haven't met the latest breed of middle lane moron - the total and utter nutter.
I'm driving along quite happily in lane 1, in no rush so doing a bit under 70, get nearer and nearer to some fool in lane 2 who's doing 60, don't want to undertake so drive along a 60 for a fair bit but decide I've had enough of that, so proceed to overtake, move into lane 2, check lane 3 and then move into lane 3, accerate heavily to overtake the car in lane 2 as quickly as possible.
What happens, once the middle lane moron notices I'm overtaking (I was alongside them) they floor it to stop me getting past, I notice that I'm already doing over 80mph. I only got past because middle lane moron has to slow down because they didn't notice the car in front of them. They then pull out into lane 3 and tailgate me. I slow down to the speed limit, I'm still easily overtaking middle lane morons in lane 2 and there's no room to safely move into lane 2 so I stay in lane 3. Original middle lane moron eventually gives up and then holds-up lane 3 by going at around 60mph (barely overtaking lane 2 traffic)."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -

That does sound bizarre. I don't thing I've met one of those before. Any particular reason you stay in lane 1 matching their speed for a bit before moving out to lane 3 to pass? Perhaps that's antagonising them somehow.
In your situation, I tend to either move out into lane 3 early, or just pass in lane 1, ideally without changing speed either way, and I can't remember the last time I got a competitive or aggressive response (or much response at all to be honest).0 -
The number of cars driving around in yesterday's fog on the motorway WITH NO LIGHTS ON WHATSOEVER was amazing.
Same when it's pouring down with rain or nearly dark.0 -
i reported a couple to TFL - at least the ones that display a taxi licence .... I've heard nothing back.
Middle lane drivers is the only rerason why theres so much traffic on the M'ways .... apart from RTA's of course ... butthere again middle lane driver might well be causing RTA's in the 1st place ?
They're probably too busy rolling around the office floor, laughing, to reply to you.0
