[Edited because I did not expect to have to stick on a tin hat when giving what I thought was friendly advice. I fail at Internet. Back to the real world for me, cheers folks. Google "hurricane preparation" if you'd like what *I* thought were useful lists applicable to all kinds of extreme weather, not just the windy bits.]

  • Well that's just typical! I finally get a holiday and am booked to fly down to Devon on Monday to see my mum :mad:

Was planning to get the garden bits and pieces put away when I get back but it looks like I'll be doing that this weekend instead :o

I'm completely winter prepped otherwise so should be fine.....unless the roof comes off....you'll find me under the sofa! :D

    Hi wilding_arms,

Hopefully the hurricane will just be a bad storm. We were recently in the path of Hurricane Irene when it was on it's way and despite many warnings it had little effect on us. You never can tell. Just in case Katy turns out to cause serious damage, we have a previous thread with lots of tips that may help too.:

Store cupboard - in case of emergency

I'll merge both threads together later to keep the emergency suggestions together.

From the last winter threads, I noticed that people hadn't banked on needing/wanting chocolate... but, once snowed in, it was all they could think about ... so load up with treats :)

....and some alcohol to stop the worry about the hurricane. ;)

Think they are used to storms in scotland, hence why they arent many trees in scotland or on the penines, they all blow away.
AND ..AND we read the three little pigs and unlike america where you build houses from plywood sheets, here we build them from 2 foot thick Yorkshire stone, nowt moves em...

Ooh I don't know about that - the last proper storm we had up here (Ardnamurchan) in May there were plenty of trees, and plenty coming down. Doesn't matter how good your walls are when an oak comes down on your roof...

We were going to drive out to the lighthouse to look at the waves that day and turned that car a couple of miles down the road because we'd already had to go round three fallen trees on a single-lane-with-passing road. And I daresay loads of people were surprised by it, not least the fellow whose entire boat, mooring and all, came off and blew up practically into our garden! :rotfl:

As I say I've been through plenty of hurricanes... nothing to get overanxious about, but nothing to be sniffed at either. It's pretty OS to be prepped, wouldn't you think?
