I have to admit that I subscribe to a food storage site from the US, http://everydayfoodstorage.net/start-here as they have some good ideas and this one is more along the lines of planning for harder times than the end of the world. They do it with a sense of humour. I have probably enough food in the house for a couple of months at any one time.

The site is quite useful as it has recipes to use some of that dried food you have in for years because you can't think of what to do with it.

hi there I agree with you. They really can be quite frugal too. I think this comes from the fact there is no real government help if you get into any kind of difficulty. There is no benefit system bar WELFARE. Though they are obsessed that they could be under attack at some stage. Glad we dont have to live like that. !!!!!!!

It helps because more of the bodies would be in their own houses and in one room in the houses, making them (you) easier to identify post-mortem.

Also makes the population think they are doing something and takes their mind off rioting or asking awkward questions.

Must admit I wasnt quite so cynical as that. I remember those stupid leaflets. My take on it was that there are were some "Dads Army" types with a very low level of intelligence there somewheres in Government looking for a little "hobby project" to occupy themselves - so they turned that "waste of space/odd example of the British sense of humour" leaflet out and then went off to waste their time somewhere else afterwards.

I cant understand why those (literally) stupid Dads Army types didnt realise that the British Public would either burst out laughing with derision at it (as I did personally) or think "Well if the Government honestly really thinks we are at risk - then why don't they do something constructive - like giving us all cyanide pills we can swallow in the event of a nuclear attack or similar? That way the 95% of us with any sense could instantly "escape" and the other 5% (ie those who actually like extreme challenges) could come out to the Supreme Challenge of "Heres a devastated world - now try and survive in it".

In all honesty - I think the thing that worried me most was the thought that there actually were some people in Government that had such a low level of intelligence that they would produce something like that.....(somewhat of a "Mygawd - is THAT the calibre of people we've got running the country? EEEEK" moment).

In hindsight - I think that was the point in history where many of my generation realised that those we had thought were more intelligent/capable than us (after all - they were in Government...so they are "supposed to be") arent actually at all...

If theres a nuclear blast, there will be no doorway left.....

Not necessarily - depends on how far away you are from the blast, whose force will fall off with the square of distance.

This thread is now starting to freak me out, so I'm off back to bimble in my own little world, where nothing bad happens :)

And a polite request, please can we move this thread back to Old Style, or the Board Guides will have no alternative but to move it to discussion time.

    Thanking you!

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move discussions from the MoneySaving boards if they’re not related to MoneySaving to help everyone find the MoneySaving tips and discussion quicker (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to Discussion Time/The Arms. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

:D do you all know why you have to put the blinds up when you take off and land at night?

I'm all for spreading the joyous answer to that too.... :rotfl:

Isn't it so that if you see an engine suddenly burst into flames you can let the stewardesses know?

My DH goes on to various bushwhacking type forums, and most of them are American. He's constantly telling me that we should have a bug out bag, a bug in bag/box, and lots of food stockpiled. Ideally I'd love to be able to get a few weeks worth of food stockpiled, but we haven't got the space. If we did then I could probably stretch the budget to picking up an extra tin or two a week of something. American houses tend to be bigger than ours, and have huge basements for storing stuff.

We live on the edge of the Pennines so can get quite a bit of snow. My store cupboard came in very useful last winter when we couldn't get the car out . We can usually manage to walk down to the shops so were ok although I did run out of eggs as the pavements were so slippery that I didn't want to risk buying them in case I fell over and broke them!

DH was very impressed when we had a power cut a couple of weeks ago as I was able to put my hand on matches and candles in the dark and found the camping kettle to boil water on the gas stove-I was less impressed to find that he'd let the batteries in the torch run down.

When I was first dating my now DH I had a power cut on Halloween of all nights (there's me imagining a mad axe man had cut the power and was creeping in to get me!) and my hero came to my rescue equipped with candles, tinned food and blankets. Needless to say the power came back on within about 20 minutes of his arrival, but he insisted we keep up the pretense of a power cut regardless lol!

At some stages in my life, I lived in places 10-15 miles from any food stores. If you live in those sort of areas, you need to have enough in to last a couple of weeks, plus alternative heating and lighting options.

Anyone in the more remote parts of Scotland, Wales and the north country probably needs at least a month's worth of everything to be secure in a bad winter.

In the city it may be different but what really hit me was that when the truckers struck a decade ago, some cities had literally one day's food supply in the supermarkets.

Yep... My friends think I am bonkers with my food supplies (which are far from excessive tbh) as none of us live far from local shops... and just a 5 min drive to supermarket but if they can't get deliveries etc then those friends are gonna be banging on my door me thinks :rotfl:
