  • I tend to have good stocks anyway, but we did our "weekly" shop on Thursday last rather than waiting til the weekend (after first fall of snow but well before the forecasted dumpings over the weekend). So there was still plenty of choice. We got slightly more meat than usual as we were shopping for an extra 3 days (freezer was a bit bare of meat) - so beef for a stew and rashers really the only extras. And we made sure to have A spare bottle of milk (as we were home in daytimes and drinking more). I do have a half litre in the freezer, and a half carton of powdered (from making a cafe mocha mix for my Sis's Christmas present) and a couple of tins of evaporated and condensed milk for baking which can be used for drinking instead.

I was looking forward to some breadmaking today - but it rained overnight so am in work after all.

But really, no more stockpiling than having my usual winter stocks in the larder and making sure that I have my usual freezer stocks maintained (I had to buy mince beef and chicken breasts last week as the freezer had been almost emptied out just before Christmas).

OK I know alot of OSylers like having a "stock" of tins and food, but recent events have made me wonder if peeps are increasing stock.

The volcano in Iceland has been talked about as effecting holidays and travel, but now stories are begining to talk about effecting food imports.

Now I think most of us know the majority of our food imports are not flown in, but once the TV news starts mentioning it, just like closures of shops for crimbo/easter, or the petrol blockades will it have the knock on effect of the panic brigade (don't want to label them all as older ladies and gents, but they usually are) go out and start clearing the shelves of bread, sugar, etc etc. Plus how long before Tesco et al use this as an excuse to raise the price of everything.

Given this is anyone thinking of increasing their home "stock" so to speak, extra loafs in the freezer or more bags of bread flour, sugar, tins, bags of veggies whilst cheap to chop and freeze?

I am torn myself, I don't want to join in to a rush to cause more problems and clear the shelves, but very little growing in the garden yet and we can't live off rubarb full time lol.

Going to Aldi soon for normal shop, but am wondering if I should stock up more just in case?

    What ev1 doing

Threads like this make me chuckle. Things will be fine, alot of our food is already or can be brought in by boat, people panic buying just cause problems to everyone, every panic buying episode in recent years has been totally unwarrented and the problems were caused BY people buying more than they needed so that there was nothing left for other shoppers. Just buy what you need, yes some things may run low for a little while but we as humans are built to survive on a varied diet and (imho) alot of people simply eat too much anyway! Buy basics and cook from scratch, and eat seasonally, if people do not depend on the processed mush that comes in from other countries they cannot miss it if it is not there.
Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!
:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!

I agree about the panic buying thing - it is human nature rather than necessity. My parents grow a lot of fruit so about twice a year they end up making jam on a semi industrial scale. A couple of years ago, my dad popped down to Lidl to get sugar and a lady behind him in the queue asked him why he had so much of it. He lowered his voice and said "don't tell anyone, but there is a sugar shortage". Within ten minutes the shelves were wiped out.

I'm not changing my habits at all. To be honest, I accumulate all sorts of random things from cooking experiments so could do with running the cupboards down a bit if anything.

We had a similar thread during the bad snow, and absolutley nothing came of it, despite dire warnings from some posters that we were doooomed, Mr Mainwairing, doomed :rotfl:

We have a well stocked pantry, a garden with loads of produce growing, and 5 chooks. No need to start panicing yet :D
