Store cupboard - in case of emergency

I will probably buy slightly more the next time I'm going shopping and I will be taking a better list than normal -but only stuff I know we'll use anyway!
I know what you mean about panic buying as DH's mum is determined to stock up, even though she doesn't need to. I think she likes the excitement: certainly she knows exactly how many bags of sugar her friends have collected etc
I'm fascinated by USA bloggers who appear to be getting ready for some sort of catastrophe:

I won't be rushing out to buy anything I have a well stocked freezer and cupboards enough to keep me going for 2 months - 3 at a stretch plus plenty of seeds on the grow.
I agree that some people panic unneccessarily this is only going to cause a bit of inconvienience for a couple of weeks at the mostBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Not Buying it 2015!0 -
Hi,
My stores are running low and need topping up - which I shall do next time i'm in the city. My biggest worry about all this is that it will raise prices yet again - prices are spiralling here.

Think we will survive! It may help us all to eat a little more seasonally with more local produce.
I do feel sorry for some of the poorer countries who survive on other nations buying their produce. Apparently in Ghana there thousands of boxes of fruit rotting away.
Don't panic yet though!0 -
I agree about the panic buying thing - it is human nature rather than necessity. My parents grow a lot of fruit so about twice a year they end up making jam on a semi industrial scale. A couple of years ago, my dad popped down to Lidl to get sugar and a lady behind him in the queue asked him why he had so much of it. He lowered his voice and said "don't tell anyone, but there is a sugar shortage". Within ten minutes the shelves were wiped out.
I'm not changing my habits at all. To be honest, I accumulate all sorts of random things from cooking experiments so could do with running the cupboards down a bit if anything.
This really made me laugh!!!0 -

We have a well stocked pantry, a garden with loads of produce growing, and 5 chooks. No need to start panicing yet

Very! Lots of the 'Prepper' type blogs seem to have been expecting all sorts of trouble ever since Obama was elected - war, famine, plague etc etc - but I can't see myself rushing out & doing a year's shopping just in case I don't like the new government :eek:I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Well I ended up getting a few extra bits as it was OH's payday anyway. Extra loaves for the freezer, some extra bread and SR flour, and a bag of sugar, plus a few extra tins. But I already have quite a lot in (one of lifes horders I think lol) so can manage for a few months if I have to (may have to have some odd meals though).
I hope the Tv news are so preoccupied with the election and the holiday makers that they don't even mention food imports. As we all know (and celyns post illustrated this lol), most of us are well aware most of our food imports are by boat, but some people panic buy food at the slightest hint of a problem.
