Average Speed Tax

The only time I've come across average speed cameras has been on motorways during road-works. Perhaps I'm lucky coming from the North East, I'm not sure...
These cameras I am in total favour of; it can't be easy for those who have to work on a fast road like that, and I have nothing but disgust for those who exceed the limits in those areas anyway.
No problem with that when they are working;)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

The Snake Pass is the A57 from Glossop to Sheffield, I'm not sure you'd combine that with the Cat and Fiddle?
As for cameras, remember that when your speedo says 55mph, it can be anything down to 50mph. Use a Satnav for a more accurate speed reading.
My bad. Thought snake pass was the name of the road between macclesfield and buxton!0 -

Try going to a few RTA's and picking up the pieces and I do not just mean vehicle pieces and you may change your mind.0 -
I know that RTAs are terrible things (I've only ever attended one serious RTA), I know the presence of speed cameras had no effect on that one.
Cameras are there to make money, end of story.0 -
I always went down the M4 around Newport at 55mph, and never got fined for it. As post8 said, the threshold is always set quite high.
If there's the 10%+2mph rule for fixed cameras to compensate for dodgy speedos (or whatever), then the same must have to hold for average speed cameras too.
Of course, if you're gonna brick it for half the journey then ease off for the rest, you've gotta be confident in yourself or your trip computer
This is an old cliche, especially on here. There is no "rule," if your speedometer is underreading, it is an offence and your own fault, it is not a defence and manufacturers do not set the speedometer to overread by ten per cent. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
But, as I understand it, 10% is the allowable margin of error on a speedo. It's certainly about that for mine.0

The ones I believe the OP is referring to are at the Cat and Fiddle, which were put there almost specifically for motorcycles. They are, I think, the only average speed cameras in the UK that read rear numberplates.
There are a couple of issues with them though. Which have been detailed in MCN - mainly the fact that there are alternative routes between some of the cameras.
Don't bike riders just cover their woefully inadequately sized number plates, when riding along that road anyway? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
