Average Speed Cameras
Do they work and how accurate are they?
Can they really pick up all those cars on Motorways especially two pods for three carriageways?
We have a nice stretch of open road over some moors by us. The start set and interim set are several miles apart but there is no where to turn off apart from private access:-
If the vehicle disappeared between cameras, say through a wall, would they send a search party?
If you raced like a bat out of hell up to say 100yards before the next camera, J turned and raced back through the first would they know?
No intentions to try either just interested.
Put their to stop accidents, particularly bikes,so appreciate the reasoning but they have taken lovely stretch of highway down a gear when it is quiet.;)

From the skid marks & amount of brake lights on the M6 i would say they do work.
Both ways, Slowing some of the traffic down and earning money.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

"It's not a tax."
Not sure if I "copied" those properly.
If they work they earn money (for whom, if it is the government or government agency coffer isn't that a tax too or is it a bit like NI?) and that is what we believe hence we slow down.
I know they have the desired effect whether they work or not.:("If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

There's a set of three in the midlands. Very well hidden, as you only see either end one as you come round a bend onto them.
And the limit is set to 60 on a good dual carriageway.
You can see all the ones who don't know about the third speed up from 60, to 70 or 80, and speed off as they pass the middle one. then you can see them brake for the third, far, far too late.0 -

They do work, but the %age of drivers caught is low due to the threshold setting used. They released the figures for the M4 from J24 to J28 last year after 13 months of use. Out of 14m vehicles, 6500 received a NIP. With a threshold of 57mph (50 limit) you have to be going some (at least during the day) to average over that speed when the rest of the traffic is running at around 50 or so.
And they are not there for motorbikes. The image is taken of the front of the vehicle, and motorbikes don't have a front mounted numberplate.0 -

The ones I believe the OP is referring to are at the Cat and Fiddle, which were put there almost specifically for motorcycles. They are, I think, the only average speed cameras in the UK that read rear numberplates.
There are a couple of issues with them though. Which have been detailed in MCN - mainly the fact that there are alternative routes between some of the cameras.0 -
It always amuses me when I see people brake just before an average speed camera. They either don't know how they work or it must just be a reflex action on seeing a yellow box.0

White lines across the road have the same effect0
