I always went down the M4 around Newport at 55mph, and never got fined for it. As post8 said, the threshold is always set quite high.
If there's the 10%+2mph rule for fixed cameras to compensate for dodgy speedos (or whatever), then the same must have to hold for average speed cameras too.

Of course, if you're gonna brick it for half the journey then ease off for the rest, you've gotta be confident in yourself or your trip computer ;)

The ones I believe the OP is referring to are at the Cat and Fiddle, which were put there almost specifically for motorcycles. They are, I think, the only average speed cameras in the UK that read rear numberplates.

There are a couple of issues with them though. Which have been detailed in MCN - mainly the fact that there are alternative routes between some of the cameras.
They did WHAT to that road? Having said that there is a stupidly high death rate on that road isn't there?

It's the one that merges with the Cat and Fiddle. It's a tad safer.

I know we have to legislate for the lowest common denominator and that accidents happen (oh no they don't collisions do).

Still sad when it is quiet.:(

I don't intend to get one as I don't break rules;)

Interesting nobody has posted to say they have been relieved of the folding stuff by one so far.

If on a journey you pass through 4 sets of average speed cameras, is the average speed taken from the first camera and the fourth or between each two sets?

Used to love driving along snake pass at cat and fiddle, would go via that route when going from wigan/liverpool area to belper instead of stoke / m6. Cameras have made it far less fun, I blame the bikers who seem unable to steer properly.

Saying that, trying to achieve the 50mph average on the windy bits is some challenge, even in a hire car.

And the speed is taken between each gate, for obvious reasons.

Agree I am sure it is more for the bikers keeping the air ambulance busy.

Funny I have done it in hire cars too;).

Yep a fifty average is about right in a car but there are some nice bits were IMO it would be safe at the national limit but it isn't worth the risk. zzzzzz

The Snake Pass is the A57 from Glossop to Sheffield, I'm not sure you'd combine that with the Cat and Fiddle?

As for cameras, remember that when your speedo says 55mph, it can be anything down to 50mph. Use a Satnav for a more accurate speed reading.

The only time I've come across average speed cameras has been on motorways during road-works. Perhaps I'm lucky coming from the North East, I'm not sure...

These cameras I am in total favour of; it can't be easy for those who have to work on a fast road like that, and I have nothing but disgust for those who exceed the limits in those areas anyway.

In fact the only objection I have to fixed speed cameras is that they tend to encourage some drivers to go well under the limits. This is why I feel Durham Police have it right; mobile vans which occasionally catch the habitual excessive speeders whilst keeping the general flow of the roads reasonable.

Scotland on the other hand is abysmal. The "40-everywhere" brigade seem to make up the majority up there!
