LL, that sounds wonderful - I really do like the sound of that flat :) and of the housing arrangement for you and your DS even more - thats really good.

After I'm well-retired next year, I'm testing the water with cat sitting - my nephew and his fiance, who'll be married by then. They got two rescue cats just after they bought their flat. So I'll have a practise, and we'll see how it goes.

I don't think I'll be near the magic million either - though I'm almost halfway. Trouble is, just over half of that is tied up in my local authority semi that I live and work in - *so* expensive down here!

Otherwise, I've been chatting back and forth with an author friend of mine, who's retired and able to devote more time to marketing than I am, he's been at it longer too. Lots to be done!

    Good evening all.

Just finsihed working out my finances.

    Savings to Feb 1st £1544

Total savings this year - £3629

    Target for 1st April - £5k.

So far so good but next month is going to be a bit more difficult. I'm going to aim for £1000 but I'm not hopeful.:o Anyhoo I'll do what I can.

Solicitor is quick on the ball, calls me today that they have started on the flat purchase, so fingers crossed it all goes through smoothly and quickly.

Have been decluttering again, DS2 has made a start on the cellar of doom and I've been doing a bit of a tech declutter, unsubscribing to emails etc.

Going to do the same with my Facebook page, no more frittering time on line........

Going to tackle the photos over the weekend.

Have started having a look at chalets and caravans for a holiday home - not quite sure where I fancy yet though. My ideal would be Cornwall but realistically that's not really doable for weekends, so I'm thinking maybe Dorset/Hampshire/New Forest.

Karma. Pity we aren't closer, we need a cat sitter in May. I really don't fancy putting our little friend In a cattery. I think our best bet is to see if any of DS2s friends fancy house/cat sitting.

Your doing so well LL I hope the sale goes through quick for you - what a good idea about the cat sitting sounds like something you would enjoy to (I think I'd be a bit worried about them getting out and lost though but I suppose technically they should just go back home if they did? lol)

Really just needed a rant tonight and not sure if I'm going to come across as a ***** saying this but I can't sleep and it's on my head. I appreciate you shouldn't care what people say but it really grinds at me this subject.

I keep our finances to my chest, actually I am just a private person in general I post pictures of my kids on facebook but that's it (and really that's for the nannies and aunties) I don't post what we are up to and show off every 2 seconds that we are at the pub etc etc.

We've worked hard to get here - and I don't even think "here" is that great (well great family happy don't get me wrong but financially toddling along it feels)

Out for the MIL birthday this evening and we have been looking at new kitchens because the plan is to get this place done up on the view to rent in the long term and my husbands cousin asked when we were having it done? and MIL spoke up "Oh they haven't done it because they can't afford it"

Now hang on...we've never said that and actually yes if we wanted to I could go out tomorrow and buy a kitchen for 2-3k (lets put aside the fact it's £40 a month to if you didn't pay in cash) but I have other priorities such as my business and paying money off the mortgage and money aside for future holidays and car insurance etc but I like to think I play the long game and don't just splash cash left right and centre.

I was really proud of her when she came into this money - when they sold the house they spilt a whopping amount between them and she's been really savvy about it - brought a nice car but other then that she has just spent bits and pieces and treated herself i.e clothes new furniture - it all adds up but a lot of people (like the FIL) will go out and spend it all in one go on holidays etc but it really has changed her.

I said to my OH on the way back that if I came into a million tomorrow I would never look down on people or think less of them - but honestly the way she made that comment half whispering oh they can't afford it...

Everytime we see her it's "Oh I'd love to do X but no one else can afford to do it with me" etc comments...money has got to her head. Lets not forget who lent them nearly 1k between them so they could actually afford to sell the house in the first place and now we are the ones that she is looking down on.

Ugh. Sorry but it just grinds my gears that someone who has no idea what our situation is just feels like it's ok to put down others like this because they have money in the bank because I swear in 2 years she will be back at zero borrowing £20 here and there from us like they were before and god help if we mentioned she couldn't afford something to someone all hell would break loose!

I'm sorry I hope I don't come across as a nutcase but I'm tossing and turning and needed to rant somewhere lol.

On a plus note, I've made a new school mummy friend who has 2 boys who will be in the same year as each other at school - she's just finished a business degree and honestly it's a breath of fresh air to be able to talk to someone who is actually interested in this stuff. I feel like we are just on the same page and I don't click with people often (I'm friendly but I often feel like I'm forcing myself to be social rather then having a chat and being interested). So don't need you guys anymore buh bye ;)

I kid... I do love being able to post my progress and watch us all going up.

    Kaya........and breathe......:rotfl:

What is it - you can chose your friends but not your relatives.......;).

Try not to let your MIL get to you. Rise above it. You are better than her so don't stoop to her level. Nothing you do or say will change her so best just to let it wash over you.

I don't like to speak ill of the dead but my MIL - God rest her soul - was a right nasty piece of work - as mean and as vicious as they come. I soon learnt to ignore her antics and the horrible things she used to say.

Anyway nice to see you've met a like minded friend in RL. You'll be able to encourage and support each other.

Oh by the way, it was Karma doing the cat sitting, not me......:rotfl:

Oh dear Kaya! Well, I'm glad you felt a bit better after a rant ;) your MiL doesn't sound like she's learned much about money, so she's never going to be on the same page as you - thats why its nice that you've met someone in RL, as LL says.

Aww ... I won't be doing any at all this year, LL, I haven't regained my health yet - but I've already thought I might well find a cat sitting job in Glasgow somewhere, so I can meet up with Elantan and Mr Ed from the mfw board on here :) When I'm well, I'm ready to go anywhere at all :D

I would like to join in this thread! I've read through the whole thing and it's really motivational. I want to join in, but have a few grand student debt that my wife and I are steadily getting rid of.

Don't feel like debt free wannabe board is for me, as its interest-free managed debt, and I'm so focused on making money through additional income streams ..

Welcome, Bmth :) getting rid of the debt is crucial, of course, but you can also be investigating second income streams right now, or checking whether extra qualifications would bring pay rises at work, that sort of thing. It all helps. What income stream were you thinking of initially?

    Hi all,
Ive become a bit of a lurker nowadays haha. I read through a few times a week to keep up with everyone but don't always post.
My current focus is on my health/fitness as ive less than 10 weeks until I go to Thailand now so am working on losing a few pounds and building strength and stamina as we will be doing a fair bit of travelling round.
I gave myself the goal of losing 2st without spending a penny on special foods, gyms, equipment etc and so far have lost a stone.
Ive found ive stuck to it more because I have challenged myself to not spend extra money and outside the specific challenge itself ive saved money on my weekly shop as well as instead of just zombie like shopping I plan my week and what I need.
Stilll a long way from the magic million but we are making progress. My fella has had his final letter regarding his compo saying it should be here with 2 - 3 weeks so that will be going towards a deposit for a house straight away.
Still awaiting settlement of claim from his car being set alight but again its all in hand. His new car was collected yesterday which he loves as its so economical.
My big expenses this month is both kids need new passports and my cooker blew at weekend.
Ivee said I want a range cooker as I do so much cooking and baking that our current single oven simply doesn't work for me. We have agreed that it is worth the money as I will get so much use out of it so im now lookin around for voucher codes for www.very.co.uk as they have one at £799 which I can get on BNPL (I know it means credit but it should easily be paid within half of the interest free period)

Hi Tink. Good to hear from you. Glad all is in hand re claims, comp etc. Well done on the weight loss, that's great stuff. That's my current focus, weight loss and general health and well being,

Brmth. Welcome to the thread. Always nice to see a new face. Good luck.

Just about to tackle the solicitors information pack re the flat purchase then maybe bag up some books for the Chazza before cooking a nice dinner.

DS2 is off this week, he's having a lazy day today and then the decluttering starts tomorrow in earnest.

I foresee several trips to the tip and charity shops.

He is currently trawling tinterweb trying to learn how to lay some decking and build a shed.......bless his little cotton socks.

Absolutely freezing here with a cold wind that could cut you in half. I'm staying indoors - nice and cosy.

Oh the joys of FID. I don't have to go anywhere if I don't want to......I can sit here and wait for better weather :D
