Thank you for your polite response. I'll conclude my input to this discussion by saying:

Whose percentage figures are you quoting? Official fudged/massaged figures? The same that would have the suckers believe inflation is running at 2.5 %? Don't forget, we haven't yet got to the stage where long-standing tenants are thrown out to make way for newcomers. It may well come in due course. In the meantime there is an element of waiting for older tenants to vacate properties by popping off. It is fact that a disproportionately high percentage of new builds are offered to immigrants - with just a few going to the indigenous (in case someone claims discrimination).

And where does your information come from? Educate yourself.

You can quote all the rule books you want, but it doesnt mean that the rules are followed.

If you don't feel they are followed, you could always challenge them. That's the whole point of written rules.

You certainly have my sympathy. It must be very hard to save for a mortgage while your forking out so much in rent. I paid a very low rent on a housing association flat in central london which helped me to buy somewhere, and then i gave the flat back for someone else to use. I do think there are far too many people living in local authority housing who don't need to be. Sometimes the properties are way too large for their needs, or they have the means to buy a property but don't. I also don't think that people should have been able to buy up dirt cheap properties in that way!

I have been privately renting for 4 years now and just received a lecture form a family member about
'throwing my money down the drain' and need to vent my frustration somewhere.

Firstly this lecture came from a person who lived in a council house for 30 years and then bought it for 25k! Where are council houses for me & my partner? We enquired about obtainng one and were told that we are 'adequately' housed - of course we are we pay £700 a month for the Bl**dy privilege!

My argument in this was why was it the council's obligation to provide houses to the likes of him anyway, surely people should pay for the house they choose to live in and not say ' the council need to find me a house'

I think all council tenants should me made to apply for their homes every 5 years to see if more eligible people could benefit, after all some council tenants pay £70 a week with incomes of 30-40k per annum.

    Sorry just had to rant!

Dodge? Oh, I see, a practical solution that doesn't fit what your friends are saying. ie, the truth. Strange definitions you use, Jimmy.

Oh so you are saying there is a practical solution to the council actively discouraging people from putting their names on the council house list.

    Of course.

Well, as you could afford both the rent and to save for a deposit, it could be argued that you didn't NEED social housing and could have afforded to rent privately. But you took full advantage of the opportunity given to you. Of course, now that you have gained your advantage, you wish to remove that opportunity from others unless they think like you.

    Of course.

So do you admit that the council discourage people from putting their names on the housing list.
