anti road pricing petition

Sarah Kennedy was talking about this proposed car tax scheme on Radio 2. Apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to
the Pay As You Go' road tax. the petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody about it. Therefore at the time of Sarah's comments only 250,000 people had signed it and 750,000 signatures are required for the government to at
least take any notice.Once you've given your details (you don't have to give your full address, just house number and postcode will do), they will send you an email with link in it. Once you click on that link, you'll have signed the petition. The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it.The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC,the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month. On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill.If you are concerned about this Orwellian plan and want to stop the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website(link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible. Sign up if you value your freedom and democratic rights.

IvanOpinion wrote:This has been on the cards for several years ... we have complained bitterly about road tax and the price of petrol ... so they have thought of a new way (which is nothing to do with being beneficial to the motorist just a better way of raising tax). You are right though .. they will be able to track your every movement, make you pay by the mile and issue speeding fines even before you reach your destination ... cool technology or what ?
On one hand it could be seen as unair, on the other hand it could be sen as a much fairer way of taxing motorists (based on consumption). The gutter press will always highlight extremes so I wouldn't take too much notice of the figures hown .. we can pretty much be guaranteed they will not be 'typical'.

Good points Ivan. I am betwixt and between on this. They are going to raise the money somehow. Better to tax people on a "usage" basis than slap an overall increase on income tax in order to raise the revenue. Although I don't like the idea of being "tracked".0 -
I thought this was the petition that's been going on for a couple of months now that reached over a million signatures over the weekend. The one that caused the website to crash yesterday, or is this another one?
The link you have given has the petition ending on the 20th - thats next Tuesday!0 -
Closing date is 20/02/07 so get cracking...:D

Please post on here as well if you've signed the petition coz it'll keep it bumped to the top of the forum for other MSEers to see... Thanks MC
Editted to add: your "signature" is not added to the petition until you click on link in a confirmation email they send to you...You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs

Then you don't have to sign it do you Ariba...:D but there are some people like myself who rely on a car but can't afford to pay any more than I am already because I have a very low income
