Yes you are right, im perfectly happy if a council tenant who does not or will not work wants all the good things in life, what bothers me is when they get given the good things in life.
Have you ever stepped foot on a rough council estate ?
Well, according to you there are none, they are all shiney and new!0 -

Oh yes there are plenty of houses that have all the free shiny things fitted, but there are not many houses that stay shiny, not many at all.0 -
Right it is their home, so if it is their home then why arent they buying their own kitchen, is putting a roof over their head free of charge not enough help ?
They do pay rent.Giving tenants the choice between having 2 glazed doors on 2 wall units is more expensive than just having a normal door. Guess which doors they pick.
Having seen the results of a few regen projects, I don't think the choice extends to glazed doors on wall units. Have you been listening to those "friends" again? Perhaps you have seen one of the many kitchens bought by tenants sick of waiting for their old, cheap as chips, 30 year old kitchen to be replaced. You clearly do not understand the cost of materials, i could go and make a kitchen and fit it tomorrow that would easily last 50 years and at nowhere near cost of a shiny kitchen, it wouldnt look pretty but so what it does what its supposed to do.
Or, we could aspire to greater things as a country. Do we want an NHS run on the basis of cost, or do we want quality to also be a factor? It's the same argument.Fitting a new kitchen for a tenant doesnt give them a sense of ownership, they know they are never going to leave that house (unless they get given one thats bigger and has a kitchen thats really shiny) because they dont have to, they dont have to do anything, they will have their ar5es wiped for them their whole lives.
Have a look at all the threads about private landlords and their shoddy, run down properties. Then see the complete lack of respect their tenants have for the property. After all, if the LL doesn't care, why would the tenant? Far better to give people something they can treasure, something to be proud of, something they would want to look after.0 -

But you keep telling us that it all gets replaced as soon as the packaging has been removed. According to you it doesn't have the time to be anything other than shiny. So, which is it? All brand new and replaced every 5 minutes? Or run down? You can't have it both ways.0 -

Well id like to know were the vast majority of people on my estate are getting this rent money from because all the council tenants i went to school with have yet to do a days work.
I have fitted many glazed doors on council kitchen units, ive also fitted cornice and pelmets, splashbacks, carousels and a few other things that are not necessary therefore its a waste of money.
The vast majority of the tenants do not look after anything they are given because they cant be ar5ed thats why im back there 4 or 5 years later fitting a kitchen that they have destroyed through neglect.
Cost vs quality, yes the kitchen i said i could make would be of better quality than one from a kitchen manufacturer, it wouldnt be shiny but it would be solid and last far longer than the shiny one so to me that kitchen has a cheap cost and is of very good quality.0 -
Yes, but as housing is allocated on need you would need to know the stats as to how many UK and foreign born people had applied to the join the housing register, how many had been made homeless, the circumstances behind their application etc to make assuptions as to whether the figures are disproportionate
I didn't say disproportionate. I wouldn't need to look at any of that at all to defend the statement I made....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Where have i said that as soon as a new cooker or whatever has been unpacked it is instantly thrown in the bin ?
Lots of new things get replaced way before they need to be replaced (every 5 minutes as you put it) and lots of things get replaced because the tenants do not look after things (or run down as you put it).0 -

Should a kitchen need to be replaced due to neglect/abuse, the tenant would be "recharged" for it.0 -

Well, the cooker would be the tenants own, so they are free to treat it as they wish.0
