BBC show on council housing now - 21:00 4th May

Are we really this stupid.

Fact: In 1971 Sheffield built 2,000 council houses, in 2010, 83.
BBC Explanation: Right-to-buy

Now I am not saying that RTB has not reduced the number of social housing properties but I can't see how it has resulted in fewer council houses being built?
I think....

Next question, if you are in a private rental costing 800 pcm and an equivalent council rental is 400pcm why would you not go on to the council waiting list? Is it any surprise the waiting list is so long if you get the same for less in a council rental?

    Have I misunderstood something?

Only because it would be a waste of time and you would never get housed by the council while you have somewhere else to live.

Has anyone thought about working and using the money to rent?

It may be a little bit harsh but if I wasn't employed I wouldn't get my girlfriend pregnant.

How do you know he wasn't employed when he got her pregnant and then lost his job?

How about you stop being judgemental until you are in possession of the full facts?

Probably the fact they had been trying for a year to get a council house, as the debts (due to discrepancy between rent and benefits) over the year were racking up.

    Just a thought. :sigh:

I guess tho my point is you can still go on the list even if you are working so headline numbers of how many are on the list does not seem to me to be the same thing as saying we have a housing shortage of that amount?

If council house rents were set to market levels councils would be better off as they would then be getting more housing benefit from the govt to make up. They would also be able to build or buy more stock as the rent they would charge would easily cover the cost of capital, plus waiting lists would fall as there would no longer be the same benefit of subsidised housing - sounds to me like a win-win-win.

Only problem is if they don't work it is the tax payer paying a larger tab for the increased rent.

Since the early 1980's when the Right to Buy scheme started the revenue from sales was returned to the Treasury, not back to the councils to enable the future funding of building social housing. The Right to Buy scheme was a Tory means to extend it's voter base to the working class. It does not believe in socialism and a welfare state, so those who don't have the means to line the pockets of private landlords, many of these now amateur Buy to Let mortgaged landlords who are as doomed as the poor that they house. This is a national disgrace. The basics for any society is good housing, health and education. The selfish money grabbers have colluded to destroy this.
