Hostels for single mothers (not divorced etc), not nearly as attractive a prospect as the thought of a nice council flat once you have a baby. I would suspect that it would make many think twice.
seriously??? fortunately, we don't live in Victorian times any more... how about children from single mothers to start work at 4 years of age?

there are probably better ways to encourage better social responsibility.

here's a couple... that aren't as Victorian as a hostel for single mothers.

    • reduce the dependency on benefits instead of working.
    • make the qualifying level of benefits more strict.
    • build more houses.
    • create more incentive to invest for job creation in areas outside the south east.

I think that the first two points actually agree with me.

Under the current system it appears having a baby is worth at least 6 or 7 hundred pounds a month tax free. Why bother working and starting at the bottom.

that's fine but sticking single mums in a hostel isn't the answer.

how about we stick them in a single mums prison, their crime would be having a baby at a young age.

A hostel that provides support, education and demands certain standards is not a prison, and in many cases could end up with a better outcome than a flat and the opportunity to just keep breeding to get a bigger place.

Whilst having a baby at a young age is not a crime, having a baby that one has no means of supporting is wrong and should be actively discouraged.

Actually that is what we did in Victorian times- they picked oakham in workhouses, thier chidren were sold as apprentices (slaves), as seen in Oliver Twist.

A hostel is an enlightened modern solution to the problem.

A major difference is that there was no effective contraception in Victorian times. There is no excuse now.

shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted solves very little.

addressing the fundamental social issues are what needs to be done by starting to educate children, teenagers and young adults not sticking single mums in hostels after they have had babies.
