No I don't - read my post. 64 bit programs do not work on my 32 bit machine.

And I never said they would!

But they will work the other way round. 32 bit on a 64 bit machine.

I was asking if the OP had downloaded the 64 bit version of IE9, in case that was the cause of his problem.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

Maybe there is a conflict or maybe the download did not install properly? I am up and running now and I hope you will not feel offended if I stick with IE8 for a while.

    Missile,

No help, but if it's any consolation, I also updated to IE9 as part of the MS update this morning and found that I could no longer download any Word attachments in Hotmail! It told me that MS office wasn't installed even though it was (although it did offer for me to install the trial of MS office 2010!) and then said the attachment was corrupt. I have since restored the system back to the pre-update state and downloaded attachments without a problem in IE8. I will therefore give it a wide berth I think!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

I need to thank you because I hadn`t looked fully into the add-ons with Chrome until you mentioned blocking adverts.
Having gone into them more fully there are actually some quite useful ones which I`ve now installed.

You do. Originally he was trying to work out if your problem stemmed from running a 64bit program on a 32bit OS, and you replied erroneously & back-to-front that "32bit software can't run on a 64bit OS". Birkee then corrected you given that it can (most software running on a 64bit OS still tends to be 32bit).

By this point it became clear that you wouldn't have been running the 64bit version, but Birkee was still trying to explain why your reasoning for it didn't make sense - probably annoyed by your superior tone while talking about things you don't understand.
