Jane I have seen familys shopping like that, and at the other end of the scale people whos basket looks like their a nutritionist, lol.
A few weeks ago I was behind a man with a trolly full of vegetarian food and fruit and veg, with vitamin tablets ,it looked lovely and healthy, my daughter said "mum I would like to try that".
ebayqueen , just shows you can never judge a book by its cover.
I sometimes get recipe ideas looking in bakets.Kindness costs nothing 0 0

I often trolley watch & i'm normally shocked buy a few things
1, When people have a trolley full for under £40 and i'm spending near that on 4 bags full ( must be going wrong somewhere)
2, When the oposite happens & someone in front of you spends £400 odd quid & they have nothing to show for it..nothing to make a meal
3, & i know i should not comment on this but here goes i'm over weight & so is hubby (naughty i know but trying hard to shift extra weight) But my pet hate is when you see people soo big that there dirty smelly shuffling around and they have a trolley full of bing dinners & no fruit veg or anything decent..0

I usually look at the person's shopping in front of me in the queue as it goes down the conveyor belt as something to do to pass the time (or read a free mag nearby or see what they're trying to make me impulse buy at the checkout).
Before I looked at the shopping, I thought, "That man is wearing stripey trousers, they look like pyjama bottoms." I then looked at his shopping which consisted of packets of cereal and breakfasty goods. I look at his attire again and think, "He is wearing pyjama bottoms!" I thought, he prob lives in the flats nearby but as I left the shop, he drove away in his car!
I just chuckled to myself thinking, I don't think I could ever do that.Lurker extraordinaire! no. 4950

Agreed, you can't help but look and rightly or wrongly, I often end up making a judgement about that person's social class. (I am always right about the social class and general level of intelligence though).
Anyone who looks at my basket is kept guessing, the choice of products would appear to be random...but that is often because I go in to buy a paper and come out with a load of extra stuff at good prices that I will use in time. Impulse buying is not v MSE or clever though!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I pretty much always have a trolley/basket full of Basics stuff so I cringe at the thought that people will be looking into it and judging me! But I think it's better than having a trolley full of expensive ready meals and convenience foods that you could easily make for about a quarrter of the price and would be much better for you anyway.
I always look at the conveyor belt when someone is in front of me at the checkout, they usually have all the good reduced items that I wish I'd been able to pick up! :rotfl:Although when Snozzburys had the easter eggs for £1 each I saw a pair of ladies with trolleyfull, I thought they couldn't have that many relatives and wondered what they were planning on doing with them all? I thought there was a limit on how many you could buy anyway?

Am I the only one who does this ?
Yesturday we went shopping and the lady in front of me
had 3 expensive magazines, bottles of smoothies,
4 frozen ready meal roast dinners @ £3 each
and her bill came to £26 (which would feed a family of 4 for 3 days).
What crazy things you have seen ?
Maybe they were having a day off, having fun and not being in the kitchen cooking. We sometimes buy these type of things, if we are staying at mums for example (so we have more chat/play etc time than cooking). Maybe they have just moved house, maybe lots of things ?
Why judge ? Be concerned about your trolley, not anyone elses!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

We are discussing a normal human habit that most people do, and we admit it, whats wrong with that ? I enjoy it - so I will continue, it makes shopping more interesting cos queing is so boring.
I am only discussing food in baskets , not religion , lol.
I have had ready meals in the past , my husband got them when I was too ill to cook but in these tough times we make sure we cook from scratch , some people dont seem worried at all which in a way is nice to see.
I have seen people in pygamas at tescos quite often , but never in sainsburys ? (as of yet). And a few weeks ago there was a girl walking around in tesco in a skimpy bikini top with short shorts on. It was a hot day.
I buy lots of value stuff too , but 98% of the time its mostly healthy stuff ....kidney beans , tins of tomatos ,spices, rice.Kindness costs nothing 0 0

I bet the checkout lady in Sainsburys where we used to live would think that we had more money than sense (or that I was very lazy) - I used to buy all pre-prepared vegetables, pre washed, peeled and chopped, ready to go in the pan.
The truth of it was, both me and my husband used to commute into London and didn't get home until almost 7.00pm so I used to get those as it was easy after a long day and we were getting our veggies rather than living off ready meals.
Since then we have moved back up North and hubby has been made redundant so I now have a trolley full of Smart Price :TThere is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro.....0

I usually like to bulk buy my beer when there is an offer on, but nearly allways get a phone call from Mrs Shandy to fetch something that we have run out of.
So I am usually the one at the checkout with 10 cases of lager and 1 pack of toilet roll:rotfl: (please dont judge me:o)“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0
