Hi there...
:j
Just a quick question regarding bank accounts,
I have had an account with HSBC for more than a year and I opened one with Barclays in February 09. I was about to close the account with HSBC but for some reason, sth is telling me that perhaps it is not a good idea.
Is there any advantages that I am not aware of to have accounts with two different banks if there is one I don't use on a daily basis?
Thanks a lot

It is best to keep it open and have some funds inside it, incase HSBC suddenly decide to close your account with no reason or something (It happens people have posted about it here and with other banks too)
But if it is a fee-paying account downgrade it to a basic/free account0 -
Thanks Stclair for the information, I have a savings account called Reserve which has a Solo card to it, it does come in handy.
What will happen to this? have you any idea?
Im presuming reading the following clause from the T&Cs they will change to visa debit also.13.3.14 When we issue you with a replacement card, we may issue it under a different card scheme from the one which applies to your previous card (for example, we may replace a card issued under the Maestro scheme with one issued under the Visa scheme). We will only do this if we reasonably believe that the facilities offered by a card issued under the new scheme will, on balance, be as good as, or better than, those offered by your previous card.
Thanks for info, the card doesn't expire until 2011,see what happens:j x0 -
I have just received my bank statement from Natwest and it shows charges of £1.39 have been applied to my Step Account.
I opened the account about 3 months ago as I was having problems with Lloyds, and put £10 in my new account just in case I lost faith in Lloyds and decided to transfer my salary into my Natwest account.
I have had a look on the Natwest website to find out what the charges could be for, I cannot see why they would charge me £1.39. Is it because I only had £10 in my account; or was it a quarterly charge (it was dated April on my May statement)?0 -
I have this one bank account and its been a year since I last visited and its an stagnant account. Will it be possible that I deposit on the existing account or I will have to open a new bank account?0

The second link I found very useful, this website provides a very good breakdown of the various accounts available including information about what type of card you will receive, i.e. Maestro, Solo, Cash Card. Also it even details the interest rates if applicable and if the accounts support Standing Orders or Direct Debits.

I have just contacted CCCS about starting a Debt Management Plan, and needed a basic bank account. I went to HSBC, but their one only allows you to use their cash card at their ATMs (ad at post offices). The above link showed me who offered cards - and I've just opened a CashMinder account at the Co-operative Bank. They offer a debit card (so no need to get out £10 for a £3 transaction... and hence no extra £7 to spend on treats etc! - plus I can use it online) and use the LINK system - no chance of being stranded next to an ATM but unable to use it because it isn't a HSBC one!
Thanks for this Thread, and for that link in particular!0 -
Hi,
I've opened a Lloyds Classic account, but am confused about what cash machines i can use the visa debit card in.
Basically, what I want to know is - can I use it to withdraw cash in any machine that shows the VISA sign?
I need to know cos I'm off on my hols soon and need to be able to draw out cash abroad....
many thanks xx0
