Basic Bank Account Thread

I have had a basic bank account with Natwest for about 10 years, but am sick of the Solo card, so am trying for the Lloyds TSB account. I applied for the standard current account, as there is no facility to apply for the basic account online, but know I will probably get turned down. They say they will try to offer another account if you don't qualify, has anyone had any experience of this? What I mean is do they offer you the basic account automatically if you get turned down for the full one? Oh & how long does it normally take for them to get back to ou with an answer?
Thanks
Natwest/RBS are getting rid of solo/maestro from june/july this year and switching to visa debit. You may want to hold out for a few months.
Otherwise try Co op they get loads of good reports on here plus there switching to visa debit too for there cashminder account from 08/06.0 -
Do you know if Natwest customers will have to wait for their current card to expire before it is replaced with a visa debit card ?DMP mutual support thread member:3270

Im unsure to be honest.
If you wait until there circulation report your old card lost and youll get a new visa debit card. Rather than waiting for your card to expire ;-)
Abit sneaky but im sure itll work lol0 -
I was thinking that
Thanks

Oh - that's good to know - unsure if I will just switch anyway as I'm not happy with Natwest's service. Thanks for the info!!0 -

I applied, last year, for a Lloyds/TSB current account knowing that my credit standing would probably not get me very far.
I was right, received a letter confirming thanks but no thanks but if I take the letter into my local Lloyds/TSB they would be pleased to open a Basic account for me.
So I did and they did, without any problems :T0 -

Hello, I have been left with a great deal of debt since leaving my abusive marriage some five years ago, since then I have worked with the CCCS to clear all my debt, but my frustrations were that I earned a good salary and am classed as senior management yet Nationwide revoked my current account and replaced it with a standard bank card that 11 year olds are given, which was not a good situation for me. I then heard about the Halifax Easycash account which was a basic account that I could have my salary paid into pay my bills on direct debit and pay for my shopping with the electron debit facility. However today after banking with them for 18 months now I have been awarded a full current account with them, so despite me feeling desperate and embarrassed in work situations producing a basic bank card, my patience paid off and I opened my account today.
I think they look at how regular you credit your account and how you run it before they up grade your account, I have also been given a contract with orange who do a credit mend deal where you prove your income, identity and address and you can have a contract ( I pay £45 ) you cannot add anything onto your account i.e broadband for the first six months but this has helped no end I am sure.0 -
i just got turned down by yorkshire for not wanting to do a credit check. guilty until proven innocent. they assumed i was doing fraud. i only went in because many people on this board recomended it. now i am recomending to skip yorkshire.0
