Hi there
Only to say that both me and hubby opened a new account with Co op a few days ago, I was surprised they did not ask for ID, even though we taken some with us just in case.
Do you think this was down to the fact that we have been banking with another for a long time, where they do checks etc?
We have been sent the sort code and bank account details in the post today (Tuesday).
Cheers.
Im not on the electrol register so that would suggest that was the reason they asked me for some ID0 -

I see.
This is the first time I have opened a new account for 18 years or more, so all this is new to me again, as been with lloyds for that long, and cannot remember that long ago really lol.
Even though we received the banking details for Co Op, we have not received the card through yet, but I think that will take a few days, good luck with yours anyway.;)The one and only "Dizzy Di"0 -

Thank you the co op seem to be very professional in what they do. I made my application over the phone and then took some id into a branch.
My application was referred due to me not being on the electoral register. I was actually seen my the branch manager when i went in to see them.
I said to the manager i had concerns over my credit history. As I originally went to barclays got my card and pin then a week later told me they was closing my account the teases.
I told the manager that and he said it does happen with some banks but ill be fine the co op. He made a point of saying they was totally BR friendly etc He said the only reason you would get declined for a cashminder was if you had a record of fraud.
I just look forward to getting my card etc now.
You have to tell us all if you get there new visa debit card as they are changing to them from the 08/06 :-)0 -

Good for you......:T:T
Funny enough, we were going to go to Abbey, but heard lots of good comments on the Co Op and with many family members that have also been with them for a number of years as well, so far so good.
We went into the Co op direct, maybe this is why they did not ask for any ID, I don't know, however, I think if we had applied online then we would have to have supplied this.
I understand that credit checks are done before they offer you the account.
I am so sorry to hear of your issues with Barclays, Co op do seem more lenient going by the comments made so far, and I'm sure you will be fine with these.
They have helped me go online banking today as well, think that was useful, as they done this straight away, with lloyds tsb, I done the details in the bank but before using it had to wait for details to come through the post, so so far Co op seem to be very good.;)The one and only "Dizzy Di"0 -
I have very bad credit and opened up a basic account with Co-op and got the visa electron card. The only prob i find that if you do seem to have a failed dd and this happens more than twice then they take away the visa electron card from you and the dd facility. This has happened to a friend of mine, after 4 months she was given the Visa electron card back and the dd facility. They charge £19.99 for a failed dd and they put the charge onto your account immediately which was a surprise to me as in the past with other banks any charges have usually gone on anywhere between 2/4 weeks later.
I just opened up a Barclays basic account today and was very pleasantly surprised to find out that is is a "visa debit card" and not an electron. This is a recent thing for Barclays as up to recently with a basic account they only gave a cash card but now have upgraded it to a "Visa debit card"
I now have both the Visa electron and the Visa debit card which is so useful as some internet sites still dont take Visa electron 4 example "Tesco".0 -
I get the feeling British banks are a lot more strict with foreigners. Compared with what I have read from other applicants, it seems like I was grilled extra hard. They seem to question me in ways that I have never been questioned before. I think I had an easier time entering Britain than I did getting a basic bank account.0

I am quite curious about the Co-Operative's Cashminder account, does one need to have work to get the account? It does not actually state that and do you need proof of address like all the other accounts?
Wow, I sound well dodgy..heheSmile more often, it's FREE :hello: Live on £4000 for a year stalker!0 -
Hi everyone.
Hope someone can help.
I live in scotland. Have bad debts from being a student.
I currently have a savings and a current account with BANK of SCOTLAND opened in 2006. My major creditor is LLOYDSTSB who now own HBOS!!
I was working until 18 mths ago and hoping to pay off debts. However now unwell and on benefits unable to work.
I was refused basic CO-OP account in 2007 while still working on basis of poor credit rating despite many on here saying it hadn't been a problem for them. I also recently applied to RBS and was refused for same reason.
I am nervous of CITIBANK as only heard of them on here and don't know anyone with an account with them. CREDIT UNIONS seem to do same credit checks for current accounts and also you seem to have to be a member for a while before opening current account but i need this sorted asap as my best option is to go bankrupt.
I enquired today at CLYDESDALE bank re their basic account. perhaps i was too honest but said i had poor credit and may soon be going bankrupt and they said no way would i even get a basic account with them.
THINK BANK are underwritten by RBS so think i'd be refused by them too.
I'm worried if i go bankrupt, my bank will close my account and i'll be stuck with nowhere for my benefits to be paid into and also i really need to be able to pay certain bills by direct debit as thats saving me money on those bills and i really can't afford to pay them any other way!
Beginning to feel very anxious and desperate. Can anyone help? even according to FSA leaflet only accounts that will take you if you are BR are co-op - which I've already been turned down for and Barclays, which i THINK i had overdraft with them over a decade ago which eventually got paid off but doubt they'd be my biggest fans!
please help!!0 -
Hi
Are you sure that when you applied for the co-op basic account you quoted Cash Minder Account to them, they may have applied for a basic current account which does have a credit search and that could be the reason for your application getting refused.
My friend actually opened a Cash Minder Account on the day that he was made bankrupt without a problem.
I would give them another go, when you telephone them make sure you let them know that it is the Cash Minder Account that you want and nothing else.
If all else fails how about the Barclays Cashcard Account- sorry I see you have applied already - how about the Post office Card AccountDMP mutual support thread member:3270 -
I have had a basic bank account with Natwest for about 10 years, but am sick of the Solo card, so am trying for the Lloyds TSB account. I applied for the standard current account, as there is no facility to apply for the basic account online, but know I will probably get turned down. They say they will try to offer another account if you don't qualify, has anyone had any experience of this? What I mean is do they offer you the basic account automatically if you get turned down for the full one? Oh & how long does it normally take for them to get back to ou with an answer?
Thanks0
