When was this? The basic account offered by HSBC nowadays allows direct debits now I believe.

  • Bit dismayed to read here that credit checks are done on basic accounts when Ive read so much up to date stuff elsewhere saying they aren't. I was thinking the point of these accounts are that they are for people with rubbish credit history, seems to defeat the object. Anyway I went into a Barclays branch to ask about their cash card account. I have an appointment and they asked me why I wanted the account and to bring details of my outgoings, is it usual to be asked for outgoings on a basic bank account application does anyone know?
And if credit checks are dne how "good" a credit rating are they expecting me to have? Thanks

Checks with the credit reference agencies are still carried out to check for other things like to see if you are currently bankrupt or to check for CIFAS (fraud) markers

  • Today I logged into my online banking and noticed what was previously an e-saver offering me at least a bit of interest was now changed to their 'Everyday Current Account'.

After looking into the interest rates it mentions the following in a PDF I accessed on the website:

Disappointingly it offers no interest so I'm looking to ditch it.

I tried browsing the 'Basic accounts' on here but couldn't find any advertising interest.

Would appreciate if someone can point me in the direction of an account that does not require you to deposit X amount monthly but also offers some interest. Is there such a thing at this moment in time I wonder.

    Thanks in advance! :)
