Hi, I notice on the Basic Bank Accounts page on this website that it states that Barclays Card Cash account offer a Debit card and state that no credit checks are carried out other than an Identity Check.

This is not the case to BEWARE, I have just opened one to transfer our spending money each month into (food, petrol etc).

I asked for a Debit Card (as you can request this or a Cash Card).

Well Cash Cards turned up not Debit Cards as requested.... So I phoned them and well it turns out that we did not pass the CREDIT CHECK to have a Debit Card so they sent Cash Cards instead.

This account is now useless as we live out in the sticks and nowhere near cashpoints (my other half does not drive and we have a large order of food shopping delivered once a month) to us AND we now have a CREDIT CHECK showing on BOTH our credit files.

    Thanks very much.

It should have been updated as that is old information that has been superceded as it has been widely posted in the forums that Barclays do indeed now perform additional credit checks for debit cards on their Basic Account, and that they are issued subject to status.

I opened a nationwide flexi account last week, my card arrived win a few days. Very impressed at how quick it arrived and there was no need to send any ID.

I need to get a Basic account as I am about to go on DMP.

    Debts are with

    Natwest
    First Direct
    Nationwide (credit Card)
    Barclaycard
    MBNA

Which bank would be best for me to go with?
  • My boyfriend has just been rejected for a Nationwide basic Cash Card + account. Unsure as to why, since on applying, we were told no credit check is done, and obviously he is who he says he is. His credit rating isnt fabulous but has no outstanding debt (hes paid it all off) other than student loans.
What other reasons can you be rejected for a basic cash card account? We're waiting to hear back from Nationwide, but not expecting them to be much help.

Fraud, bankruptcy or lack of ID.

When I transfer money between my Nationwide and Co-op accounts it's almost instant. I was surprised too! It's the same with Paypal, used to have to wait days for it to clear into a bank account, now it's straight away.

I transferred some money into my daughters bank account yesterday, and it immediately went straight through although we have different bank accounts ( HSBC & Nationwide) does anyone know why this is the case?

If so why does it take longer for other things to clear?

    Thanks,

    MH

Its called the Faster Payments System, its been around a few years now. Payments made this way usually go to the recipients account within 2 hours, though the FPS guarantee is by the next working day.

Other payments take longer as that's the way the system for those payments was designed.

I.E. a cheque takes up to 6 working days to clear, because it has to go to a processing centre, who then send it to the bank where the cheque was issued, who then confirm if the cheque will be paid or not, hence it taking days rather than hours.

Just opened a Norwich & Peterborough Building Society Gold current account so I could get their debit card as you do not get charged for overseas withdrawals. Also going to start their regular saver which pays 5% gross. .

I'm not sure this is relevant to the thread about opening a basic account.

A N&P gold current account is not a basic account and is a full current account.

People who need a basic account will generally have bad credit files and wont be able to open normal current accounts.

So the account you mention wont be able to be opened by people in this situation!!!
