  • Afternoon all,
Not sure if this has been mentioned on this thread before, but i have checked with a few banks about the basic accounts and it would seem that they all do credit checks even for these now! i was gutted, but i had no problems opening an account with Think Money it all went through while i was on the phone to them. Just not sure i am keen on them now....
Anyway, just thought i'd let you all know that they all do checks now :(

  • Hello all,

With regards to the those who got accepted for a Nationwide basic account, did anyone who got accepted at the end of the online process encounter any problems thereafter with acceptance?

I'll not bore anyone with my situation however I am getting rejected from all banks with regards to any current account applications & have been accepted online with Nationwide for their basic account to include a debit card. I don't have a perfect credit history due to one credit card debt which has defaults however am sceptical as to whether the forms when they are posted out will require a further credit check.

Did people just receive account details etc following acceptance and/or their card or did they have to sign agreement forms etc & provide any further ID etc? Also, how long did it take to receive any correspondance from Nationwide?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Kindest regards

Hi, I heard nothing after my acceptance (no e mail confirmation). I received my first correspondence about three or four days later, I think it was my card and then got various passcodes and pins in the following days. Once I had been accepted there was nothing more to sign.

I did however apply for a second account (one for bills, one for spending money) and was rejected. I don't know if it was because it was a second account or because their application procedure has changed??? I have however linked a savings account to it which was easily done.

Hope it all goes ok for you :)

Hi Clare, thanks for the reply. I applied last Sunday evening & have had nothing since so will maybe give them until Tuesday before giving them a call. Hopefully there's no glitches & it goes as painstakingly easy for me as it did you
  • Account is very good and they seem to accept almost anybody. I haven't heard of anyone being refused one after reading the message boards.
  • Hi

I need some advice. I need to open up a basic account with a debit card. I have a passport, and I live with my parents so they have copies of the utility bills, would that be enough ID to open an account?

I was thinking of Lloyds TSB, does anyone have any previous dealings with them? I would prefer to do this all online or by post and not go in branch if I can help it.

    Thanks

I have a basic Lloyds TSB account and although I only use it for my motoring purchases / expenses - petrol , insurance, Green Flag breakdown cover - it's not a bad account if you can live with only using Lloyds TSB Cashpoints.

Tip - To get around the Cashpoint restriction , open up a Lloyds savings account at the same time and keep your own spending money in the savings account as the ATM card for the savings account can be used anywhere..

By running two accounts - basic acount for Bills with debit card , savings account with small cash balance for personal cash access, you are covered for most situations :). Not sure if application is In Branch or online application.

With TSB launching very soon, you may be worth waiting a week or so and see what they have to offer too.

Thanks for the advice, I'm still not sure about my proof of address though, as I said I have a passport but that's it, I don't have a job at the moment or a driving licence. I'm not sure what else to use.:(

Lloyds will oblige if one of your parents, with appropriate ID, wil accompany you to a Branch. Why do you want to avoid going to a Branch?
