Natwest seem to be doing this a lot I was accepted online and then again in branch when I took completed application in to them, then about a week later the branch manager called me and said I couldn't open a STEP account due to my credit rating! Do they not understand we are not asking for a all singing all dancing account just somewhere to have money paid, a decent card and to be able to pay direct debits out of???? Wouldn't we all be better off with a shoe box under the bed???? In the process of opening a citibank account so wish me luck!!! Surely I cant be that undesirable as a customer admittedly I have 1 CCJ for which I had no idea about until getting a experian report but there are a lot worse customers out there!

Just an example (not racist in any way so please dont take this as a racist comment) I know at least 20 people that have lived in england less than 2 years and have gold accounts huge credit card limits and god knows what else so why are the banks offering the world to non UK residents but just from looking at these forums and my own experience the people that have lived in the UK and EU are struggling to be allowed a simple bank account??? What do they have that we dont????

If you know these people well enough to know they have Gold cards with huge limits and god knows what else, you should be in a better position than us to tell us the answer to your own strange question:confused:
Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.

You obviously didn't read this thread in full, nor does it seem you even read my first post, or complete any research of your own.

There are several basic accounts that offer 2 in 1 Debit Cards (Maestro/Visa). I do agree that a large percentage of basic accounts only come with a cashcard, but there are many that as mentioned that do offer a full debit card.
I am fully aware of this and probably should not have made such a snap comment, but James is using these questions to persue his own strange agenda of disinformation and scaremongering regarding chip and pin. We have never had explanation as to his motives but you will find similar posts (of which this is one of the more insightful) all over these boards.

    Snap comment - apology accepted.

Can you show me one single link that I've posted that is misinformation? Don't you think consumers should be made aware of the huge amount of PIN based fraud which has happened over the last 4 months or so?

Don't you think that if a Bank offers a product, then they should tell you about that product and how it works?

Yes there should be an option available to people.

The fact is that chip and pin has made things safer and more convenient for the majority of people. There will always be fraud, and as one loophole is tightened up then a new one will be found.

My cards have been skimmed on several occasions in the past (several occasions too often for my liking) and evidence suggest overall C&P has made fraud less likely. It is a pain when it happens but is just something you and the industry have to deal with, and they will with time.

Maybe misinformation is the wrong word, but your posts certainly appear one sided and distorted from the bigger picture. I do not think that you have presented any clear evidence or research that suggests that chip and sign will actually improve matters to a great extent or that people are not being refunded because they have been subject to fraud.

    Tom188,

Thanks for the reply and I appreciate your change of tone.

I don't think your can ignore the huge increase in fraud over the last four months. The majority of this fraud wouldn't have occured if consumers didn't have PINs with their cards, or used PINs in an unsecure, or unsafe environment - point of sale.

It's ok to say you will be refunded, but who pays for the aggro, hassel, and inconvenience as described by subscribers to these threads?

This is a money saving form, and if you can reduce the risk to yourself of becoming a victim of this type of crime, then in my opinion it's a money saving expercise.

Shall we get back to Basic Bank Accounts and try and find out if these type of accounts offer a Chip & Signature option?
  • to the 2 who actually got recognised as real people by natwest, I didn't even get a reply from them when I applied for a step account online, and to james, life is not all smelling of roses, we have good and bad, we have black and white, we have left and right, we have a police force and with that we have the criminals to go with it, sadly this is the case, nothing we can do about it, except not blame others when things go wrong, all chip and pin is , is a safe guard to helping people stay more alert from the criminals, it makes it harder for them, not us, and we should also try that alittle bit harder to protect ourselves as well. this post is not meant to upset anyone, just think alittle harder next time your in a shop or at an ATM stop look and see if anyones behind you, look to see if anyone is stood to close, if so ask them nicely to back off, look to see if anyone is trying that little to hard to be near you when your entering your pin, watch your purse/wallet, make sure you can feel it in your clothing dont let them catch you out.
there used to be a poster from years back "watch out there's a thief about" if more people took notice of that nowadays, the world would be a better place.

Pls be nice to all MSer's
