Veg to plant in May and things to do.

They are better in firm ground, and won't be ready until next spring - but they are a very welcome veg to have as they are around when little else is.0

bump...cos it took me ages to find this earlier

Is there anything else I can plant inthe last week of this month?0 -
I have just been given some purple sprouting broccoli plug plants. Can I grow them on in Morrison buckets or should they be in the ground? Also do they need any special treatment - I assume I won't get anything from them this year as I think they are a winter plant?
I'd like advice too please - my ground is literally grey dust and stones. Could I grow PSB in gro-bags?
Thanks!0 -
Way past my bedtime.........zzzzzzzzzzzz
Salad stuff can still go in. As can runner bean sowings in pots ready to take the place of ground as it clears (eg after June digging of early spuds - just add good muck, and try to dig the spuds so you have a 1m x 1m space, then do a 12 stick wigwam).
Dwarf Broad Beans - The Sutton can be planted for another few weeks too.
I'm sure there's loads more - best tip is to have a look at the back of your seed packets and see what else can go, or if you want to buy more seeds have a look in a catalogue. Unwins website does a very good sow/plant/harvest wheen type diagram.0 -
Carrots, runner and french beans, sweetcorn, all salad leaves, all cucurbits, perpetual spinach, spinach, beetroot, spring onions, mangetout, peas. That's all I can think of over breakfast

my broad bean plants are standing firm and looking very good. I have had a couple of blackfly infestations but caught them early and sprayed them in the evening with this

The overwintered broad beans have had their tops pinched and I was expecting a lot of trouble with the spring sown ones but so far so good. We are eating the whole pods when they are about 3-4" long, just a short steam and they are lovely
I am trying to think of where to put autumn carrots as I got several packets of autumn king in an offer, after the broad beans I think and I`ll net them
My parsnips are looking well and sturdy I am glad to say, after germinating very eratically. I did some weeding below them but think I`ll be able to leave them alone now as the leaf canopy is growing nicely
We are able to pull carrots most days at the moment but from the troughs at the house. Resistafly has a very nice taste so that will be my main choice next year and I`ll be able to leave them un=netted, which will make life a lot easier
I had 20 spare bandit leeks and all the leeks I transplanted 2 weeks ago are settled so those spare have been dibbed into spaces between the original plantings. All I want to plant now is 2 red russian kale which are growing on at home. I have managed to get all brassicas planted through weed fabric and it is already making a massive difference esp with watering as it stops evaporation. I have made one bed just for winter and it contains pentland kale, 12 tundra cabbages and is waiting for red russian. I have another bed filled with samara cabbage as they will stand for 4 months, sept onwards and I just have a row of swede in there too. I have been trying to arrange plantings so that beds aren`t held up with the late producers0 -
Sorry to sound dense but what does 'nip out the side shoots' on tomatoes mean? I have about 10 tomato plants, I have my cane supports in the posts, they're all quite big and bushy looking, they're gardeners delight variety - Am i supposed to be nipping something off them?*** PROPHECY_GRRL****** DEBT FREE AS OF 17/10/11 - I DID IT!!! ***0
