Veg to plant in May and things to do.

I have planted out at the end of April my courgettes and squash. Watching out for the night temperatures, had to cover it on Tue night but they still seems to be doing really well.
Carrots and coz lettuce seems to be doing pretty well. Rocket seems to be fine too. Just planted some loose leaf salad as well.
My tiny bush tomatoes are now also out, again, had to cover it on Tuesday... They don't seem to do anything since I moved them out, so probably put them out too early, but on the other hand they are not dying either.
Leeks never seem to be doing anything, not sure I want to grow them any more. I don't know how everyone says they are no work when they never do anything. I have 1 since last summer that survived the whole winter and it's still only pencil thick!
My peas has been sown straight out on beginning of April (early variety) and it is doing really well. It's now about 15 inches tall.
My last years strawberries are in flower. This years bought plants nearly all died... only few survived. Blueberry just turning from flower into fruit.. raspberry just about to flower.
Planted couple of cucumber Spacesaver seeds yesterday (inside for now), very excited about them, I hope they will do well! I love cucumbers, but last I tried 3 yrs ago they got eaten by slugs. These are going into pots, as they are apparently good for that so they will be high up and I will protect the pot with copper tape as well.0 -

Planted mine out the same.
Fleeced them up this week due to frost.
They seemed to survive the frost ok but 2 days later they are now all caput.
Oddly the pumpkins all came through just fine
Teach me to get ahead of myself again with planting out.
I'll learn eventually. Maybe.0 -

Sorry to hear that! I hope mine are O.K., haven't seen them since yesterday!0 -
Spent the morning up at the Allotment yesterday, planted my Cabbages, cauli's, broccoli and sprouts and build a netted cage around. Got back home and I have sown some Swede, fennel, basil and coriander.
Off up to the Allotment again this morning and plan to sow some Sweet peas direct under a little wigwam type thing, had some sown in the Greenhouse and only half germinated, put them out in the Garden and "something" has dug them all up.
Looks like we might get some rain at the Weekend, I've forgotten what it feels like."WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

My garden work stalled for a bit - it started raining yesterday and seems to be forecast rain for the next 5 days. I was hoping to cut the grass in the front yesterday, but rain caught me out - it was heavily raining when I got back from work.
Anyway, I hope to plant out my tomatoes this weekend, even if it rains, and plant out some other salads in a container.
I have just noticed this morning that 'someone' is tasting my radishes (slugs, I guess), but salad leaves, spinach, etc seem to have survived so far. I have used nematodes in all beds, but I will be putting some more pellets as well to try and prevent my food being eaten away!
Oh, and I managed to get a slug in one of the trays in my greenhouse (blowaway), the romanesco and a few salad leaves have been sampled - pellets went down into pots this morning... Might be out tonight with a torch to try and catch the said offender.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -

Ha, that's cheered me up - thought of you done up in trenchcoat with a huge spy glass, lying in wait for a slug!*** PROPHECY_GRRL****** DEBT FREE AS OF 17/10/11 - I DID IT!!! ***0 -
Just a quick question - can I cut down the leaves of the daffodils now or do I need to leave them to die naturally? They have stopped flowering a week or two ago and have cut down the flowers. It is in the front garden raised bed, and once these are off, I will be planting the calendula and asters (got from Aldi last week).Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

Ok, more questions.
I am considering to try one of my raised beds using square foot gardening. I was thinking to put in the tomatoes (6 plants), couple of cucumbers, aubergines in there, and then fill the front half square (the bed width is 2.5 feet) with the salad and radishes.
Now, the information I found says to put 1 tomato plant per square foot, planting in rows. That works great for me - I have 8 feet row. So, I can put my tomatoes in and then add some cucumbers at the end (2 per square foot, 6" apart). 6 tomatoes and 4 cucumbers would be perfect. Then I have a selection of aubergines that I want to grow, and these are said to be grown 1 per square foot. So I was considering putting 8 plants in one row.
Front 6" filled with the salads and radishes. Oh, and odd marigold squeezed in somewhere.
Does this sound reasonable? I was planning to keep a few tomatoes in Morrisons buckets and pots, as well as couple of cucumbers, and depending on weather either keep them on the patio/around the garden or in the blowaway.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -

You may need to consider the impact these plants may have on one another when planted together. Companion planting guides don't recommend putting tomatoes and cucumbers together and certainly when I tried to do just that last year, I ended up with few cucumbers and green tomatoes that never ripened. :-( Wikipedia has quite a good guide here:

Do let us know how you get on with your square foot gardening; I'm really keen to try this next year. :-)
