Diddly - do it in blocks this year, suggest 1m x 1m will give you 12 beansticks in wigwam format. Seeds can be sown in pots until you have prepped the ground and got the sticks up. I use wigwams for french beans as there seems to be less "congestion" at the top.

If I put in 12 beanstick in a wigwam format is it 1 plant per stick or two and can you grow anything in the middle or won't there be enought light?

I always put two plants per cane in and wouldnt bother in the middle due to light - could probably get away with a sprinking of raddishes/salad if your pushed for room

1 plant per stick will give more light to a courgette being grown in the middle, or if you have the room do the wigwam so there's a gap in the sticks on a SW direction so tht any plant grown in the middle gets as much light as possible.

I tend to do about 14 plants per 12 sticks, so 2 will have to share, I sow 16 to guarantee 12 plants so normally end up with a few extras.

    Hello All

    I have been busy today..

    Outdoors
my parsnips have gone mad !! Bought an F1 variety and sowed them straight in to the soil ... well they are everywhere had to pull so many up. Wont make that mistake again next year... toilet roll sowing for me :)

Carrots seem to have a few gaps where the seeds are coming up.. Will prob leave a week and then sow over again

I have put another lot of peas out and mangetout. Eating salad leaves and spinach already yummy :-)

Swiss Chard & Beetroots are coming along nicely and I have sown some more in the greenhouse for succession sowing.

One question.... I planted garlic out a few months ago and seems to be fine but any idea when they will be ready?

    Greenhouse
    (Unheated)
Cucumbers are looking great will need to get them into bigger pots soon currently in 12.5inch

Toms are all in different stages I'm growing 'Ferline' in the hope if blight strikes i'll have a better chance. Also growing 'Gardeners Delight' & 'Maskotka' (these will go outside).

Need to do some more peas and Mangetout as last year it was the lack of succession sowing that I let myself down with!!
Goal - We want to be mortgages free :j

    I Quit Smoking March 2010 :T

MrsR, my garlic (variety Music) was planted last Oct/Nov, it's bulbing up nicely at the moment and not producing scapes (yet!).

Normally I would harvest July ish, but after the 2 bought (choke choke) bulbs I have in the kitchen are used up, I will use mine from the garden, even if it isn't 100% ready, a fresh moist bulb has a taste you will never get from shop bought.

Please do try at least one fresh green garlic :)

Don't do that. What you have is perfect, the reason why people sow into loo rolls is because of bad germination outside. There is no other reason to do it (ok apart from a slug problem).
You want stuff to be sown direct if possible, because in most cases it gets off to a better start

We're all behind ourselves this year......potatos not even in the barrel since OH's back injury and my disability doesn't help.
Foster daughter brought us up some courgettes and tomatos she'd grown in the greenhouse so I can ''weather'' them in a bit putting them outside in the daytime but they're very young plants and doubt they'd survive a hint of frost.
I'm hoping with a bit of instruction from OH I can plant on whats needed. It's all done in containers.......pots are already where they should be but they've got last year's compost in. Will that be ok ? No way could I empty them and refill them but I think I can plant a few things (she says hopefully):)
Haven''t got any runner bean plants yet........packets of seeds that are still unopened -dwarf french bean and two lots of lettuce, different sorts. Think I might be ok to have a go with them.
The one thing that is growing is the garlic OH planted last October..........lol:)
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

I would try to mix in a bit of fertiliser with some compost in the pots and try not to grow the same thing that was grown in them last year.

Absolutely - defeats the object otherwise!

Just don't sow the whole packet at once......
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
