I wrote to Dulux to complain and they refunded me for the paint and the cost of the work to re-paint. I had to provide them with reciepts mind. All in all, I think I got about £200 pounds back.

We've bought B&Q waterbased gloss since and it's fantastic - keeps it's colour, has a really nice finish and it's surprisingly easy to apply. It also washes out of your brushes with ease.
I only wish we had discovered it years ago.

You can get Leyland paint from Screwfix.

I have just bought 750ml of high-gloss white for £7.99. They also do a 2.5 litre tin which works out cheaper per litre but more than I need.

I find it covers really well and doesn't discolour
  • The same yellowing has effected my house, AkzoNobel have admitted to the fault and have agreed to pay for the redecoration costs, but this taken over six months of telephone calls and email exchanges. My question is because the works will take 3-4 days is it reasonable for me to expect them to compensate me for the loss i occur whilst off work to supervise the decorators whilst they repaint my property? If not then are consequential losses something i can persue through the small claims court? The product was not fit for purpose when it was sold to me so my argument is that i should not be occuring loses to have my property repainted to a state it was in prior to the product ruining my property.

I wont be buying Dulux again either. I'm thinking of trying Crown next time or maybe even a Wickes own.

Crown yellows too lol goodluck. All solvent based paints yellow with lack of daylight or near heat. Yes the voc levels now have affected that buts its happening to crown too .

I think most of the paint companies have had problems with solvent based paints since the 2010 VOC legislation - Crown now even have disclamers on their trade website about yellowing etc!

Hopefully most brands are getting it sorted now, I painted my house with B&Q own brand white gloss in late 2011 and it is now a horrible yellow, but as soon as I can be bothered am going to have to repaint it!!!

Very common discussion on diy website forums such as 'DiY Not' and DiY Doctor.

You can get Dulux to admit it & in different circumstances vouchers (which you should refuse, who wants more of the stuff) &/or compensation as well.

Search those type of forums for more advice.

Sadly, we did our whole hall, stairs (all those banister 'slats'), landing & 11 doors with their white gloss before discovering the problem. Too late for receipt or photo of tin/s!! I'm livid, more for the amount of work which will be involved in 're-do' than lost dosh.

The areas changing colour the fastest are any NOT in direct sunlight, they only took 2 measly weeks. The rest are going/gone, but were a bit slower.

Painted elsewhere with Crown non-yellowing water based and it is better but I'm still not 100% happy. If you wipe water based regularly (I do, by the door handles) it wears thin then off.

Some of the commenters here have not read the OP's thread properly, preparation has has absolutely no bearing on the end result. This is a problem with the PAINT turning a ghastly cream/yellow colour, not the technique of the person applying it used!
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

I've been using satinwood or eggshell on my woodwork and have found it stays nice and bright. I generally use wilco's own. Decorated 4 rooms last year and all the woodwork likes fine.

  • Hi, hope you don't mind me posting here but I have set up a group for people having trouble with Dulux gloss. Trying to collect stories/pictures in one place. We had a 'get lost' letter from Dulux but I'm not giving up!

If you search Facebook for the group 'Dulux Brilliant White Gloss is not so brilliant!' you will find us

Thanks and hope to see you on the page!
