Hi. I have similar experiences with Non Drip Gloss. I bought Crown NDG for the woodwork in my flat. I run short and went back for more and the Woolworth store I bought it from (4 or 5 years ago) had run out.

All they had was COVERPLUS SATIN EFFECT PURE BRILLIANT WHITE. This was their own brand of paint. Well I bought it anyway. Now, some years on, the woodwork in my bedroom has turned as cream as anything. The one bit of skirting that I used the COVERPLUS on is whiter - much much whiter than where the Crown NDG was used. Really strange as to me the branded paint should be superior. The COVERPLUS was not NDG though, but it was white so I thought it's the same thing really!

I think to get the best result, you have to buy a pot of undercoat and a pot of liquid gloss. Non drip gloss boasts that you don't need to use undercoat so you would buy that instead obviously - it's cheaper and quicker to apply than buying the other two pots - but you get what you pay for.

I don't know that I would blame Dulux - in my experience, NDG does not stay pure brilliant white for very long.

Can you let me know how you get on though.

    Good luck. :)

I took back to B&Q a used pot of their Once paint that took two coats. It had printed on the side that if you aren't happy they'll give you your money back.

So I went back. They got their paint guy to come out who looked at the nearly empty pot and asked if I read the instructions that state "May require two coats".

I told him I had, yes it was clearly printed that it may require two coats and it had, but I hadn't read in store that this was the case and their guarantee stated if I wasn't satisfied I could have a refund. So I'd like a refund.

He muttered something to his colleague and walked off. I got a refund :)

Sometimes buying own label is good 'cause the shop makes these promises! - so they have to stick to them. The big brands don't always do this. I worked in B&Q in the 90's and their paint was made by Kalon in Bately, West Yorks. Not sure if it was good or not compared to Dulux/Crown/Ronseal or whatever. But it was cheaper.

They used to drum down on us - make sure people buy our brand of paint, the reason being if they ran out, they would have to come back to a B&Q to get more. Whereas, if they bought Dulux or Crown and ran out they could go to Great Mills or Texas Homecare and get it.

I would never have thought of that - the shops really do have everything worked out I suppose!
  • I have just painted my daughters bedroom with dulux brilliant white gloss, wish id read this first. But Luckily most of her paintwork is hidden.

But it does explain the horrible colour that my woodwork has turned in my bathroom and downstairs toilet. And as i am going to be repainting them in the coming weeks, will buy something else instead.
  • Yep, we had the same problem. Al my newly painted (well 3 months ago) wood has turned a smoky yellow. We will not use again.
  • Just an update, I wrote to Dulux ICI paints to complain about the yellow paint- I included a photo of the paintwork and the batch number of the paint. They asked me for a reciept and the original invoice for the work. I didn't have the reciept but they accepted my bank statement and refunded me the whole lot.
They confirmed that if the paint is not exposed to sunlight it will yellow due to the fact they've tried to make it more environmentally friendly.
So it's worth complaining. Just got the horrendous task of sanding and re-painting the whole house now - oh joy.

We used Dulux "Once" for our ceiling, it needed 3 coats!

We used B&Q own brand coloured emulsion for the walls with no problems at all, it was much cheaper and the colour was fine. Would definitely use it again.

  • Just painted bathroom ceiling 3x with dulux white matt and still looks terrible.

Also noted previous yellowing on gloss I did 6 months ago, but couldnt work out why as thought i'd picked a decent brand.
