    Like it or not, best thing from what you're saying is going to have to be a reinstall. It's not as hard as it sounds. You'll just have to work out how much you have to back up..., and therefore what's the best method. Can get cheapish 80gb portable harddrives for <£20 - not great value for money compared to much larger ones for twice the price, but fine if you never need more.

    In the mean time make the Super OS bootDVD as a temporary measure to do the BSL homework...
    download: http://hacktolive.org/wiki/Super_OS
    download: http://www.imgburn.com/
    follow this guide: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=61 (no need to worry about step 2b)

    When you boot from the DVD, just select to Try it, and don't install.

    I dont know where to start .... ;( in reinstalling. I have a fair few files/pics and music on my hard drive as well as programmes etc.

    I meant to get round to buying a hard drive ages ago as I wanted to download movies but never got round to actually buying one. I think Amazon sold a reasonable one for under £50.

    It just seems inevitable that I will do it wrong, or worse I will still have the same problem anyway!

    1. Make the SuperOS disk and test it - that way you'll always have a way of getting on the internet to ask for help;

    2. Get a decent sized external drive

    e.g.

    1.5tb
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002P3XSAO/ref=nosim/?!!!!!hotukdeals-21 Western Digital, 1.5TB £53.35

    (or if you trust Pixmania, then much cheaper:
    http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/western-digital-wd-elements-desktop-1-5-tb-usb-2-0-external-hard-drive-black-onl/940121)

    1tb
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002E7HEVU/ref=nosim/?!!!!!hotukdeals-21 £42

    3. Install Macrium Reflect, and make a full backup of the hard drive (that way at worst you can restore things completely if you realise later on that you've forgotten something);
    4. Make the macrium rescue disk so you can restore things if anything goes wrong;
    5. Make a list of all your programs, makes it easier to install things later;
    6. Decide which programs have settings you want to back up - the settings will usually be in c:\users\JenJenny\Appdata\Roaming. I tend to copy things like Mozilla, Thunderbird, etc, so I can use Firefox as normal;
    7. Find all the places with your documents, pictures, music, etc, and slowly back them up. Just copy the folders.

    You'll have to be careful with iTunes, since that's the problem program. Just backup the music.

    None of it is a hurry, take your time and do the best you can. Nothing is going anywhere. You may have to set folders to show hidden files.

    The SuperOS disc, you mean write onto a CD?

    I will investigate buying a hard drive, I'm guessing a tb is even bigger now than a gb.

    Well the SuperOS package is so big, it needs to be written on a DVD. It's the only one off-hand I can think of that works out-of-the-box with the BSL dictionary videos. Most other packages would need to be installed first and then the packages installed for media support.

    In marketing terms, a terabyte is like 1000gbs. "It's so big you'll never fill it!"

    (first hard drive we ever bought was I think 20mb... and that's what the salesman told us. He was right, never did manage to come close to filling it! Programs and games were far too small at the time, Tandy 1000)

    Use Imgburn though to make it bootable (easy to use)

    Right well I have had the DVD's for awhile and Amason delivered finally the hard drive so I am all ready to do it but where do I start?

    I've read the links and it only says how to do one image - how would I go about doing all of them? Is that what I am supposed to be doing? Also I've googled making a Super OS disc and not had much luck with finding instructions. I'm going to start working my through the things you have said in post 93.

    Just come across this - How to make Super CD+G disc
    Are they the same thing?

    No need to google, the Imgburn guide is just a general guide on how to burn CDs or DVDs properly with an 'image file', so as to make them boot correctly. It's not specific for 'super os'.

    Super OS disc
    The purpose of this is to have a disc you can use to get on the internet no matter how messed up Windows gets. It'll also let you do the BSL homework.
    1. Download the "Super OS" .ISO file.
    http://nattechservices.com/sites/default/files/Super_OS_11.04_32_bits.iso and save it to your desktop or somewhere you'll be able to find it later.
    2. Install IMGBURN http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/ImgBurn/1128426215/1
    3. Follow this guide on how to burn a DVD and select the Super_OS_11.04_32_bits.iso file you downloaded in step 1: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

    If you do it correctly, you'll have a disc that you can boot up from if anything goes wrong with the hard drive. Test it if you want - restart the computer, and press F12 (or whatever key it says to use the BOOT MENU or BOOT SELECTION MENU), then select the CD DRIVE. Select the default options and don't install it, just 'try it' or whatever the option is.

    Macrium Reflect backup

    The point of running this kind of backup, is so you have a full 'image' or exact copy of Windows, as messed up as it is. This way, you can always go back to how it was in case things somehow get worse. It's just meant to take some of the stress away of reinstalling, as you know you'll always be able to restore things.
    4. Install Macrium Reflect http://www.macrium.com/download.asp
    5. Run Macrium reflect, select Drive C and press the Top left Button with the red arrow, Create A Backup of a selected partition
    6. Set the destination to the external drive you bought from Amazon
    7. After it is done, it'll ask you to put a blank CD in to make a boot CD, do this (select the linux option). If it doesn't ask you to do this, then select the icon that looks like a CD and it'll start the dialogue.

    You should now have a backup of Drive C should anything go wrong, and the boot CD you'll might need to restore it. You may wish to test the boot CD in the same way you tested the Super OS DVD.

    Backup other things

    Now just need to figure out what else you want to back up, e.g. music, bookmarks, pictures, documents. No rush.
