Clearing space won't really make a difference to speed, just stopping programs running. A good program to stop autoruns is Sysinternals Autoruns (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902), but only untick things you are 100% sure about.
What error is given for uninstalling Rapport & Quicktime? Can use Revo Uninstaller to help uninstall those programs (http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html) - just be careful if Revo starts trying to take iTunes with it, and double check the registry entries and files/folders it wants to remove.
May as well see if your computer is useable for what you need it for in its current state, and grab Adobe Shockwave Flash & the Quicktime plugin.
With passwords, the biggest issue is the email address - sites have the "forgot your password" dialog which lets anyone with access to your email account reset most website passwords at will. I'm pretty basic - one password for most things, and something completely different for email, and something completely different for financials. I use the standard firefox password manager for sites.
Not 100% sure about about anything re:computers.
When I select Rapport/QuickTime to uninstall it goes to Windows Installer and then in time "Rapport Service has stopped working" and closes.
Quicktime goes through the whole process of Windows Uninstaller and then doesnt remove the icon out of the Control Panal - just nothing, no message or anything.
I have been trying to remove IfranView too and so far it just cant do it.
Just tried the Revo thing - its found 11753 objects suggesting that QuickTime is a really important programme somehow ....... I dont want to uninstall it and then find out its responsible for loads of different process.

No Quicktime shouldn't look like that. Does the standard uninstaller let you do a 'repair' of quicktime? Are you able to reinstall it: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Try reinstalling Rapport and Irfanview as well, then uninstalling:
http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm
You say you believe the disks to be your Vista installation disks - why any doubt? Are they the ones that came with a computer, or are they burnt recovery disks?0 -

Oh dear not sure what I have done now ... I turned the computer on and windows appeared saying an Unidentified Device was detected and required a driver which the computer has spent ages trying to find using Windows Update. It mentions Conexant HDA D110 MDC V.92 MODEM.
Its also been coming up with 1766:An internal error occured in a remote procedure call (RPC).
Repaired QuickTime - it doesnt react really but has gone through a process of initialising and configuring something and then nothing.
Its been awhile since I got this laptop and the disks dont look very inportant IYKWIM.
They are labelled Operating System, Drivers and Utilities, Roxio Creator, USB Flopy Disk Drive Device Driver, Microsoft Works 8.5, McAfee Security Centre, Power DVD and Notebook Driver.

Should have realised it was an internal device and would want to reinstall itself, sorry - go to the desktop, right click on My Computer or Computer and select 'Properties'. It'll bring up a list of all your devices. Just look for the Conexant HDA D110 MDC V.92 Modem or 'Unknown device' and right click/disable.
The 1766 error is for 'corrupt registry or outdated drivers'. Could be a pain to track down, or hopefully is just from the above if it installed the wrong drivers.
Try system file checker. Insert the Vista Operating System disc you have.
Press Start, type in CMD, then Right-click on CMD that appears in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
A black screen with white text will pop up, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow.
Here's a video with annoying but cheerful music (if your flash is working) which shows how to do it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2NWP8UNnDs
Also see what happens when you reinstall Quicktime from that link, also Shockwave/Flash.0 -
Done all of the above and reinstalled QuickTime/Flash and Shockwave (also checked x2 that I have run them) and just checked signstation website and its the same thing!!!!!!! I dont believe it ... Plug in failed to initalise etc.
I think I might cry in fact.

I'm really sorry that you are at this stage. If you lived nearby by I'd just come over to backup and reinstall for you, or muddle through and fix things.
The video type is 'mpeg-4 mp4v.'. You can test whether or not you can play these at all if you right click to download this file to the desktop, and run with Quicktime player:
http://www.users.on.net/~russ/signstation.mp4
Try the same with Windows Media Player, and please letl me know what both do. If it doesn't work with either, then the codec is missing. Reinstalling iTunes might help, but if not I'll find a codec pack later on for you.
There are some things you can try that others have said worked for them with this problem:- Reinstall iTunes, reboot, then see if the above file & A-Z website work;
- Reinstall WMP and see the same;
- Control Panel > Quicktime > Browser > MIME types. Check or uncheck the part for MPG/MPEG4, i.e. the opposite to what it's set. Quicktime isn't the only plugin that'll do mpeg-4.
- Try with another browser: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable, http://www.opera-usb.com/operausben.htm
I think you should also later re-read post 52 http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=43390246&postcount=5 and have some discs handy. Reinstalling will solve a lot of problems particularly after having malware compromise the system. It's not as hard as it seems, and will be worth the bother. Also I can confirm that a "Super OS" LiveDVD works out of the box with the the videos in the a-z dictionary. Doesn't do Shockwave, but does all the quicktime stuff. Could be a temporary fix to make one. http://hacktolive.org/wiki/Super_OS0 -

Right back at it for awhile ......
Just tried the Signstation link - it works fine on Windows Media Player but causes QuickTime to close down.
Not sure if this tells you any information about what the problem could be.
Lol I've just signed on the my internet banking and HSBC are offering me a free subscription to McAfee and Rapport - I did wonder where they had come from, now I know!
I'll work on doing the rest of the tasks tommorrow afternoon as off to a talent show tonight :eek:
Jen0 -
Right I did all the tasks last night but forgot to write them up here....
Each time I switch the computer on, it starts the "found new hardware" thing. The computer is very slow getting going. Windows Media plays signstation fine, I reinstalled Itunes (uninstalling it first) and in the beginning it stated that signstation failed "An error occurred inside a plug-in contained on this page" and "The plug in did not initialise properly" again. Then I refreshed the page and it played (!!!!), then IE failed and shut down "a problem with the webpage occured..." I tried another sign video (just to check its not that particular one thats a problem). IE attempted to restore the website but each time its the same problem....
I attempted to start QuickTime - Windows Host process (Rundll 32) has stopped working. Data Execution prevention warning and closes down.
I then installed Firfox from the link you gave me - tried Signstation and nothing, shows only text, not even a suggestion of a video.
Then installed Opera (saved - then run) from the link - extracted to desktop, tried signstation and played fine (!!!). Then "The QuickTime plug-in 7.6.9 failed. A restart of Opera is recommended." Then "An error has forced Opera to close" Restarted as directed and it does the whole process again.

Like it or not, best thing from what you're saying is going to have to be a reinstall. It's not as hard as it sounds. You'll just have to work out how much you have to back up..., and therefore what's the best method. Can get cheapish 80gb portable harddrives for <£20 - not great value for money compared to much larger ones for twice the price, but fine if you never need more.
In the mean time make the Super OS bootDVD as a temporary measure to do the BSL homework...
download: http://hacktolive.org/wiki/Super_OS
download: http://www.imgburn.com/
follow this guide: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=61 (no need to worry about step 2b)
When you boot from the DVD, just select to Try it, and don't install.0
